I Flip for You

Do you want to win a camera? You do. Trust me on this one.

To raise $200 for Charity Water (as part of the Camp Mighty effort to raise $20,000 total), I’m raffling off a spare Flip Mino 8GB HD video camera, which, if this isn’t your first visit here, you know is one of my favorite things in all the world. If you’re alive, you should have one, no exceptions.

This one is newer and way nicer than ours.

Because I think the Flip’s reputation speaks for itself, I’m not going to waste your time up-selling it. Basically, it’s a pocket-sized HD camcorder so simple a toddler can use it (WE ARE LIVING IN THE FUTURE, PEOPLE), and it could be yours yours yours for a mere $5, just as we’re moving into the Most Recordable Time of the Year. (If you’re not familiar with the Flip, Flip Mino 8GB HD video camera here’s an Amazon link with some specs.)

A $5 buy-in on Team Four’s donation page (mention “Leah Agirlandaboy” in the comments so you get credit) earns you one chance to win, and all proceeds will go directly to bringing clean water to families who need it. If you’ve already donated, you’re already entered, and you’ve shot to the top of my Awesome People list. Thank you so, so much.

Here’s [what I think is] the fun part. I’ll take raffle donations until we hit $200, since capping the contest at forty people will both keep your odds good and make it possible for me to send a thank you gift to each person who donates. Sound good? This way, even if you don’t win the grand prize, you still get something for your five bucks.

When I was a kid I made friendship bracelets out of telephone wire, but I’d never made one out of thread until last week, when I embarked upon a mission to create a colorful keepsake for each of my Camp Mighty teammates, most of whom are still strangers to me. Now, if you’ve ever made a friendship bracelet this way, you already know there’s no way I could single-handedly whip up twenty-five of those babies in two weeks, since each one takes two-plus episodes of ANTM, meaning I’d pretty much run out of time before I’d even started.

What I can do, though, is make a bracelet for each person who donates $5 to Charity Water in my name. In fact, for each $5 donation, I’ll make a separate bracelet, so if you want to give $25 (or more), I’ll send five bracelets (or more), which you can wear all together or give to your own friends or, I don’t know, tie to a tree for some lucky passersby or a very fashion-forward sparrow. If you don’t want a bracelet, that’s fine too; I’ll find some other way to bombard you with gratitude.

My first, incredibly sloppy attempt. Yours will be better.

If you donate, please leave a comment here or email me so I have a way to contact you when it’s time to mail out your prize, be that an old-school friendship bracelet (with an updated chevron twist!) or a shiny new Flip camera that will–at the risk of overstating its value–completely change your life.

Thanks, you guys. Really, really. I’m excited! Let’s do this! $5!

  • Hooray, special bonus! I wanted to donate anyway, thanks for the prompt. I’m in!

  • Love the raffle idea, and it’s a great cause. Count me in, please. I just registered my donation to your team’s page.
    :)

  • Done and done. Great idea.

  • I made a donation a couple of days ago, hopefully that will count :-)

  • I donated! What a great way to raise money for an awesome purpose. Thanks.

  • I don’t even remember who I came across your blog, but I’ve been reading it for several months. I’m super jealous about the Camp Mighty, and can’t wait for your recap :) Happy to donate!! (makes me feel better for not buying a bottle of bourbon, quaffing it down, and mailing it for your wedding!)

  • Bugger… typo…

    * how I came across your blog… not WHO

  • I’m so impressed with your bracelet making! I just started my own friendship bracelet and it’s taking forever. My husband thinks it’s super sad that I am making myself a friendship bracelet….which maybe it is. I didn’t need an excuse to donate $5, but now I have one – I need a friendship bracelet from someone other than myself!

  • I donated $10! This is so cool, and I’m totally impressed by the bracelets too, because after a weekend of furious bracelet making earlier this summer I totally lost steam. :) I finally took mine off after the summer since they got kind of… ripe…. but I really miss them. (I’ve always wanted a flip!)

  • Yay! I just gave you $10 over yonder. I’m also secretly excited that you’re going to be in Palm Springs, because I went to Middle School and High School there, and my mom still lives there, and I got married there, and, and…. I hope you have a great time!

  • I remember making those bracelets as a kid! Yours looks way better than mine ever did.

Is it weird that I kinda want to make one right now?

  • O’rly? :)

Have at it!
