Birdbrain

Happy Halloween, fools and ghouls! I’ll be quick since I, ah, still need to whip up my costume for this afternoon.

(Saying that makes having started Wombat’s costume on Friday night sound almost reasonable, doesn’t it?)

The good news is I spent exactly zero dollars on this, thanks to years of hoarding fabric and throw-away clothes that could be used as fabric. The dark green and the multicolor polkadots are left over from Wombat’s birthday banner. The light green and rust are fancy dress shirts that a friend of mine grew out of and gave away when he moved to Seattle about four years ago. (Simon used those same shirts for Wombat’s applique guitar onesie.) The yellow is from Wombat’s first Halloween costume–Devo Baby!–and the white is from last year’s costume, Baby Baby. The peach and light blue are from old work shirts of mine that had been rendered unwearable by a combination of my middle-aged muffintop and the rise of the low-waisted jean.

Birdie!

Unfortunately, they’re fetching but not exactly functional.

I asked him what sound he makes and he said, “Cheep, cheep, HONK HONK HONK.” Whatever you say, birdbrain.

I kind of followed this pattern but made some adjustments to the shoulder and wrist attachments as needed (using ribbon left over from our wedding), in part because I wanted it to be able to grow with him for a few years and, okay, maybe because I wanted to wear them too.

Have a good one, everybody!

  • Well done!

    Beautiful.

  • So I think I totally saw y’all on Saturday. I was walking home up Piedmont during the trick-or-treating (OMG, so many people!) and unless there was another kid wearing a really similar bird costume, I totally noticed Wombat’s wings and thought they were cool!

  • my little bird with the colorful wings—

  • They’re gorgeous! Way to go, mama!

  • Love them!

Have at it!
