Hot Dogs and Hamburgers

I would prefer a girl. I know that admitting this will make me unpopular in some circles, but the only circle that really counts in this case is the one on top of my head, and in that circle at least, I’d feel worse lying about not having a preference than I do about admitting one. And how bad does that feel, admitting it? Not bad at all, actually.

It’s not like we’d want to (or even could) send back a son, if a son we shall have. It’s just that, well, for a girl who moaned about having to wear a dress on any occasion before age sixteen, I seem to have some sort of infant-dress fetish these days, and you know how when other women see babies they want to dip their toes in barbeque sauce and devour them one by one or other similar baby-eating nonsense? Well, I seem to want to put those same toes into socks printed like Mary Janes and clothe the rest of the body in a matching ruffled frock, topped with a bonnet trimmed with lace. Again, this from the person who wears jeans and tennis shoes every day, who needs a rubber band to remind her to keep her knees together when wearing a skirt, who, honestly, prefers the company of men because it means she doesn’t have to work so hard at being a lady.

So, if today we find out it’s a girl, I will be happy and content and giddy at the thought of all the bonnets and bloomers in my future. If it’s a boy, though

  • I rocked the OshKosh B’Gosh back in the day. That’s an awesome brand. I kind of wish they made it for adults, ‘cos I’d totally be all over that.

I hope you get the news that you want, though. :-) Keeping my fingers crossed for y’all.

  • I have to admit, the small-amount-of-psychic that is in me (I know, it sounds weird) has always thought it’s a girl, like from when I first found out you were knocked up. I will also be surprised (but thrilled) if it is a boy.

  • But does Huckleberry sound better as a boy’s name or a girl’s name? THAT’S the question.

  • For what it’s worth, I’ve also been thinking all along that you’d have a girl, but maybe I project my girl desires onto everyone.

I’m sure it was completely obnoxious, since some of the attendees had only boy children, but at my shower in Georgia, I stopped in the middle of opening all my gifts (most of which were relatively gender neutral — books and such — but some of which were the best kind of girl gifts: smocked dresses) and said, “Let’s all take a moment to acknowledge that girl stuff is so much more fun than boy stuff.”

Horrible, I know. And I am very un-girly, too.

But there is a lot to be said for overalls and wee baseball caps and wee Chuck Taylors, too.

Either way, you’re going to have so, so much fun.

  • Waiting on pins and needles!

  • Wait, so has Simon decided he wants to know? This is, of course, important because if he can’t know then we can’t, right? And we’re totally gonna get to know, RIGHT?

    Happy ultrasound either way!

  • I admit that with Giggles I wanted a boy. I think deep down I knew she was a she because I didn’t want to find out. But apparently it was all the rage to find out the sex and she wasn’t shy about showing her “McDonald’s Arches” as the tech called them. I bawled for about 5 minutes, more upset with myself that I was so fixated on a boy and not anything else. But now with 2 girls if a boy suddenly happened upon my lap I wouldn’t know what to do with him.

Can’t wait to find out.. You are sharing..right?!!?

  • Dresses with pockets. And that’s all I’m going to say about that. Also hot, jazz piano player. That’s not my dream though but still. I’m hoping for a girl.

  • I thought you already knew it was a girl? Am I imagining this? Well, I think it’s perfectly fine to have a preference. I know I want a girl more than anything. I can’t wait to hear!

  • I cannot wait to hear! UGH! I wanted a boy and got a boy, My mom swears that the Mother gets what she wants. We all want a healthy baby but I think if we are telling the truth we want it to be a color of health, be it pink or blue.

  • Oh my goodness. WAITING…

  • I am completely with you on wanting a girl (2 weeks away from the ultrasound and counting), and I already have a 3 year old girl! I can’t tell you how many people say to me ‘I hope it’s a boy, every woman wants a boy’. I actually think it’s going to be a boy because I want another little girl so badly.

    Good luck either way!

  • I recently bought a pregnant friend those mary jane socks and it almost made me want a damn baby too.

  • I was all excited thinking this was The Announcement!

I am tapping my fingers, because I KNOW you know by now.

(No pressure, though. I just need to know what to buy for the Wombat.)

  • IT IS 8 P.M. CALIFORNIA TIME. WHICH MEANS YOU KNOW. WHICH MEANS I WANT TO KNOW.

Am dying over here. DYING DYING DYING.

  • It is 8:48 p.m., and for those of us who have nothing better to do on a Friday night but wait to see what you are having, we are dying here.

  • OMG. REPEAT WITH THE DYING THING. UUUUUUGH.

  • This is why I don’t think I can have children…because all I want is a little girl and if a little boy popped out I’d resent him forever. No really, I’d have no idea how to deal with a mini baby thingie…

  • Fun – I found out yesterday that I’m having a boy. And you are brave for admitting your preference. I was hoping for a boy much for the same reasons you are hoping for a girl, but I didn’t want to come off as a jerk if I “didn’t get my way.” I hope you got what you were looking for!

  • They make maryjane-printed socks? OH THE CUTENESS. Whenever I imagine future kids, they’re girls. Not sure why, exactly…

  • Exciting!

I think it’s great that you openly admitted that you want a girl. I think that deep down most people prefer a certain sex, but hold it in, not wanting to appear as though they aren’t happy with the “other” sex.

I totally hear ya on the whole wanting a girly-pooper, and totally get ya on being so happy if you are cookin’ a boy!

    All the best!

  • Oh I just came across your blog. I look forward to reading your journey. I’m trying to get preggers right now. Best of luck.

    I want a girl too!

  • I hope you are eating your words right about now, Thou Carrier of Baby Boy. :-)

You just THOUGHT you wanted a girl. See, girls are a ton more trouble. And the old wives tale, in my limited experience, holds true: boys are harder when they are little (sometimes) but much easier when they get older (always) than girls who are just trouble all around!
