Nothing But Moose Brunch and a Bonfire

The roads are empty on Sunday mornings, and the fog hanging low over San Francisco resembles the fog that has settled between my ears after two nights of talking through the sparkly veil of champagne (Friday) and Pimm's cup (Saturday) with good friends. I went to bed both nights with the thoughts in my head swirling like Tilt-a-Whirl carts on their revolving platform, only minus the looney-tunes carnival music and instead backed by the ambiant shush of the ocean. On Friday night I fell asleep tonguing theater candy stuck in a molar; on Saturday, my subconscious built dreams around the campfire smell of my skin.

On Sunday morning we drove over the bridge with only a handful of other early birds, all of us steeled to the cold, bright whiteness of the fog with sunglasses and scarves and travel mugs full of hot drinks. When we met our party for brunch, the girls' still-wet hair was in buns and braids or loose and drying to its natural flip and wave, and in our group of ten (and a half-pint), forty percent were being wished a happy birthday, and Simon and I had brought one hundred percent of those a bottle of booze each.

Wombat was there as well, and it was not too early for him at all. Aunties fed him from their plates, and Uncles tossed him in the air. Strangers stopped and gasped because, well, because:

The brunch was in honor of Moose's birthday, and here she is (with Kristin) looking fresh and fabulous even though she was up late partying the night before. Apparently Dungeness Crab Benedict will do that to a person.

Mid-twirl.

He kept thinking Scott was his dad because of (a) the shoes and (b) the bottle of bourbon he was holding.

(More photos of Sunday brunch here, including Giant Horse Dog #2.)

The night before, Holly and Alison threw Sean and Nathan their 2nd Biennial Birthday Beach Bonfire, a tradition for which we don coats and hats and scarves in July and see how many jokes we can make about wieners.

(More photos here, and if you need some help getting in the mood, feel free to stop by and smell my coat/shoes/camera strap/hair/car, which all still smell like bonfire smoke.)

I would also like to mention that sometime in the last month, a screw shook loose in my noggin and I became consumed with the idea of making a watermelon bowl. The ladies let me bring it to the beach party, where it sat untouched for the remainder of the evening because Hello! The beach in July in the evening in San Francisco is not exactly watermelon weather. Nevertheless:

Be ye warned: melon balling is not a good task for perfectionists. Only about half of the watermelon cooperated and the rest was a pile of slush and scraps.

Finally (or, rather, firstly), on Friday night I hosted a Nintendo Enthusiast party to celebrate the deal between Wii and Netflix (you can stream the Instant View movies through your t.v., yo!), and although I don't have photos, I do have video, but I also don't know if I need to treat this like a sponsored post and scootch it over onto my review blog (where, by the way, you can still enter to win $100), but what I do know is that Nintendo and the kind folks at Brand About Town sent me a box full of candy and ordered three giant pizzas for us, so I want to make sure I do it right.

In the meantime, have I mentioned lately how cute my kid is?

Wow, that's some sort of adorable. Two hats?
I used to always get Converse for Monkey, though lately I've been trying to give him things without laces, so he can in theory put on his own shoes. But they're so adorable, and always drew aproving comments from the grown-ups. I plan to get Miss some pink ones to wear with stripy tights in the winter.

God, that kid is adorable.

Such a fun weekend! I saw you all THREE times in 48 hours--how often does that happen??

Best name for a blog post EVER!

The shirt I am wearing right now smells like the bonfire and yet I DIDN'T EVEN WEAR IT TO THE BONFIRE. How does that happen?

Aww, this looks so fun! Makes me miss all the friends I had in San Diego and all the cool activities we'd do.

Second in line for the cuteness award is that delicious chocolate lab. I have major lab envy. (Damn landlords and their anti-dog rules.)

Wombat looks so dapper. My gosh that is a cute kid. Sounds like a fun, filled weekend.

Where did those clothes come from? That is far and away the cutest kid getup I have ever seen. Ever.

Thanks for your kind words, everyone. Of course, even if you all said my kid was ugly, I'd still think he was the most gorgeous thing ever born, but it's still great to hear people agree with me from time to time. :)

Jocelyn--The outfit is a mishmash from lots of places, but the shirt, tie (it has bulldogs on it!), and vest were given to him by Kristin and Scott for his birthday. Seriously adorable.

That kid is so stylish and yes he is too darn cute too. :)

Most stylish little boy ever - Love it!

yep, your kid's cute. Love the argyle leggin's.

You got fantastic nice ideas there. I made a research on the topic and got most peoples will agree with your blog.
