Pregnant Pause
And now for a moment of vanity:
I'm getting on a plane in a few hours, and now that my Flight Pants haven't fit for several months now (they're the super-comfy brown velvet ones I wear to concerts and whenever I fly, and even though Simon says they "don't flatter," I refuse to get rid of them because they're just that comfy) I was forced to actually put some thought into what I'll wear on the plane tonight.
Cue wardrobe crisis. My favorite maternity jeans--the ones that are just long enough and just slim enough and just the right darkness of wash--don't fit anymore. As in, I cannot sit down in them without feeling like a hunk of cheddar being split by a cheese wire. How could this happen? They have an elastic waist panel, for crying out loud!
Apparently my belly is not the only part spreading these days, and my hips, oh those ever-troublesome birthing hips, are asserting themselves in the best way they know possible--by expanding. And hence I cannot sit down in my favorite maternity jeans and must resort to my unfavorite maternity jeans, the ones that are too long, too baggy, and not at all the right darkness of wash.
The scales weighing fashion and comfort have just tipped dramatically and permanently in a very interesting direction.

Ooooohhhh! Let me know if you need me to take your outgrown maternity clothes off your hands.
This is why I loved stretchy pants. I had a fave pair of jeans but they got small quick. just wait until your shoes get too small. Well maybe it wont' happen to you but my shoe size went up nearly a whole size the last 2 months of my pregnancy with both girls. My feet?!!? C'mon you've got to be kidding me, what do my feet have to do with my pregnant belly?
Oh, see this is one of those sides no one tells you about! When your hand is forced into the box of handmedowns from your sister because you somehow outgrew your own clothes during your visit and you pull out a striped polo and hell, you just wear it, knowing better, but you wear it.
My husband picked me up at the cirb and omg I quote "That looks like a shirt your Dad would wear, IS that your Dad's."
Needless to say, I did NOT wear it again.
Lululemons? Maybe?
I say amen to lululemons. Get the best yoga pants and you won't feel like your waistband is slicing into your skin.
I wore Old Navy yoga pants (with the foldover waistband) all through my pregnancy. Lifesavers.
Do you have time to get thee to a store? Call me vain but I feel just miserable when I am wearing clothes I dislike.
Save those jeans that no longer fit for the post-partum days - you'll be glad you did!!
I had some maternity hand-me-downs that were huge and I took to be polite. Then I ate crow and had to wear them towards the end of my pregnancy...but at least I didn't have to buy new maternity clothes that I would only be in for a month or so. Now may be a good time to hit up Old Navy for sales on last season's maternity clothes, esp. pants, in bigger sizes.
Have a good trip!
I believe a good stretchy cotton dress is the answer to most of life's problems.
I third the call for lululemons! Not only will they get you through the rest of your pregnancy, they're awesome for lounging in post-partumn (wearing mine today) and they do such wonderful things for your rear!
I've heard about the Lululemons before but, um, I may be a fan of casual, but I am NOT wearing yoga pants to the office. And aren't they also pretty expensive? I'm not spending a lot of money for glorified sweat pants, thanks, no matter how magical they're purported to be.
Lucky thing is that I have several pairs of bigger jeans and, come Sept/Oct, it's going to be summer in the Bay Area and I can start wearing skirts and dresses. For now, though, it's big old baggy elephant jeans. Sigh.
And oh man, if my feet grow I'll be screwed. I already wear a size 10.
I can't wait to hear about your flight. Feel free to pass on any tips. I'll be pregnant (first trimester) and flying in a few weeks.
Also, could you post your spaghetti sauce recipe again? My garden is suddenly bursting with ripe tomatoes and I want to use them before they spoil. thank you and good luck!
Just to weigh (ha!) in on the Stretchy Pants Issue, I have a pair from H&M which I've worn the arse out of, they're so comfortable. Obvs not exactly office attire, but highly recommended for almost everything else.
