It's Aliiiive!

Mama's pointy chin or part of a hand?

Baby looks normal and healthy (and alive!) and was, according to the tech, "very well-behaved," just hanging out sucking its thumb(!) while measurements were being taken and Simon was squeezing my finger and smiling like a proud papa clam.

I've been watching this video over and over all week in anticipation of this ultrasound, and although I would have been happy for a glimpse of just a general baby-like shape floating in space with a heart going woosh woosh woosh, I secretly hoped we'd witness a fancy baby boogie or, better yet, catch the little booger sucking its miniature baby thumb because, come on, what's more human-babyish than thumbsucking? We weren't disappointed on any account.

Our little thumbsucker

Our agreeable little baby sat still up until the very end of the exam, when Simon (Simon!) asked if the tech could take a look and a guess at the blue/pink parts, at which point wombat woke up and started rocketing around its vast uterine landscape like a, I don't know, a tequila worm? (Are tequila worms mobile? I don't know.) At the quick look she got, though, the tech said she was guessing "girl" because she didn't see any dangly bits, and although I didn't mind hearing her guess--despite our decision to make an event out of the real reveal after the twenty-week scan--I figured what would it hurt because it's obviously way too early to tell, right? At this stage, girls and boys look pretty much the same (i.e., they both look like boys), right? It's a 50/50 guess, RIGHT?

But the more I think about it, the more I remember the tech's exact words--"I don't see any boy parts"--and now I'm thinking that if there weren't any dangly bits AT ALL--no "angled dangle," so to speak--we've totally ruined our own surprise because we are totally having a girl. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I happen to think girls are pretty neat. (AND OMG THE TINY DRESSES AND LACE EYELET BLOOMERS! AAAAAHHHHH!) (Not to mention that my list of girl names is about five times longer than the one for boys.)

Either way, baby is measuring right on schedule at 12w5d, has a strong, regular heartbeat of 158, is sporting a normal nuchal fold, and is damn cute, if I do say so myself.

Woosh woosh woosh

And then I had a cherry Danish.

Yay for making it to the 2nd trimester! We got a guess we had a girl at 14 week,s decided to ignore it and found out for good we've got our sugar and spice coming at 20 weeks.

Oh, I am so excited for you both! Yay! Baby!

SQUEEEE!!!

Girls are awesome (after having two boys). The fun! The shopping! THE BLOOMERS!

Also?

Since Miss Emily is a thumb-sucker (and so cute with it), I am partial to thumb suckers.

And to you, of course.

Squeeeee!

HOORAY for you guys! All three of you.

I love the pictures. Congratulations!! This is all so exciting :) And your belly is so adorable!!! I'm so happy for you!!

Wonderful news!

So cool, I just stopped by to check if you had updated. I am knee deep in my baby girls, baby clothes. The time has come to pack them away properly and admit that she is no longer a baby, but instead a little girl. Sniff! An emotional day all round! Well done you for growing such a perfect little wombat!

LOVE these pictures! amazing how already it (she?!) looks like a baby. i don't know why i think that's crazy cool but i do. congratulations for the millionth time to you and simon. awesome, in the truest sense of the word.

that thumb shot is soooooo adorable!

Just wanted to say congrats! So happy for you! :)

I wouldn't rush out and buy anything girly just yet. My sister's ultrasound tech guessed girl at an early ultrasound, but the 20 week ultrasound revealed a large set of cojones.

How exciting, either way! Aren't ultrasounds the best? When I was pregnant I wanted to have an ultrasound booth at the mall so I could check in whenever I wanted.

So extremely exciting!

What could be more appropriate than celebrating with something "Danish"?

My heart beats a little faster for all three of you. Congratulations!

Congratulations! Haven't checked in in a long time, and I'm thrilled to see you so happy =)

OH HAI little wombat. You lucky, lucky creature.

I'm always amazed that something so small can be so perfect. Did you know that Wombat had fingerprints at 10 weeks gestation?? Fingerprints! How big could they be?! Such an amazing gift to be able grow a person.

Congrats on a great ultrasound!

EEEEE!!!! So exciting! I'm so happy for y'all!

Woohoo! So awesome to see the baby!

Wheeeeee!

You have names picked out! Double whee! Oh wait. Are you going to have a fake name for the baby for the website? Will we ever know? Aack.

Beautiful kiddo you've got there.

yayayayay! Lookin' good!

Yay!

The thumbsucking one is so sweet. Ultrasounds are so much fun.

Looking good, little baby!

I'm no doctor, but that's either a baby or the cutest looking gas I've ever seen. (I'm going with "baby.") YAY for healthy ultrasounds!

Adorable!!!! :)

*happy dance*

Hi, baby!

Yay, how exciting!!! Keep it up, little wombat!

Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!! Go Baby Maybe Female Wombat!

This is so exciting! The pictures look so detailed. I'm amazed.

Like for real, do you think it's a girl? LIKE FOR REAL? I need to know this, I don't know why. Like it's POSSIBLE to find out that early, you know?

ZOMG. Exciting stuff.

Girls are the best. I wouldn't know what a boy is like, but I am partial to labia. That sounds like my sexual orientation ought to be brought into question, I guess, but I'm just talking about raising babies. But wow, how exciting for you guys...I CAN'T WAIT!

Oh wow! Awesome, awesome, awesome! I go in for my first big 12wk-ish tomorrow. I am both excited and terrified for exactly the same reasons you were. So happy for you, I bet that's a relief. I think I may be only a week behind you so I am living vicariously through your little milestones. If all goes well tomorrow, I make the big office reveal tomorrow, then the family reveal this weekend. I will also make my blog public then if you ever feel like stopping by! Thanks for sharing, it's nice to "not-really-know" someone else going through the same things.
Congrats to you and Simon!
