Deserts, English Humor, A Fine Reisling
Big week, this. Tuesday: ultrasound. Wednesday: concert. Thursday: birthday. Friday: Leftover cake. Saturday: Maker Faire (courtesy of reader Katie!) with Emily and Dan, and then a surprise dinner somewhere that requires reservations.
I am hoping even though the Maker Faire organizers used ye olde tyme spelling of "Fair" this won't be just another ren faire in disguise.
I am hoping that the surprise dinner also includes cake.
I am also hoping, of course, that the ultrasound shows and tells us what we want to see and hear, and also that I don't accidentally pee (1) on the exam table, (2) in the waiting room, (3) in the car, (4) on the way to the car, or (5) in my desk chair right now because I'm already so worked up about the drink-32-ounces-of-water-in-30-minutes-and-then-hold-it-in-for-an-hour-plus-however-long-it-takes-us-to-probe-you that my bladder has the shakes.
Think happy, dry, frosting-coated thoughts!

There, you're all set. And Happy Birthday! I'll probably forget by Thursday, so just in case...

Posted by: bloopy at April 28, 2008 06:23 PMthey make you drink how much and hold it for how long? that is just not right!
Posted by: jeorg at April 28, 2008 06:37 PMLeah, don't drink the whole 32 ounces - a bit less should be fine. When I went for a 12-week ultrasound last time (though I know yours is earlier than that) I drank the whole lot and was dying to pee so badly that the technician took a little look and decided I could go and relieve myself - but then there was no way I could just pee *a little* (sorry about the TMI) so it all came gushing out and we had a very very fuzzy picture when I went back out for the rest of the ultrasound. So my assvice is to drink, say, half to 2/3 of what they tell you to, and have a nice clear view without killing yourself.
Posted by: Christine at April 28, 2008 06:46 PMgood luck tomorrow! can't wait to hear about it. and have a wonderful birthday week! yay!
Posted by: lindsey at April 28, 2008 07:12 PMI heard from some geeky podcast I listen to (can't remember which one specifically) that they chose that spelling 'faire' as a play on words because that's the spelling of the French verb "to make."
So there you go. For whatever it's worth.
that's so odd. I never once had to drink water before an ultrasound. One doc told me that's only an issue if your doc is using an outdated model.
Posted by: hue at April 28, 2008 07:16 PMThey made me drink water before my ultrasound (because I thought I was dying of stomach cancer) (turns out it was just stress) (very expensive stress) (which didn't make me LESS stressed, as it turns out). Anyway, I forgot to drink the water, it didn't seem to make a difference, the end. Though if it turns out I DO have stomach cancer, I guess that water was PRETTY DARNED IMPORTANT.
I will be visualizing many delicious frosted cakes for you. Hey, it's California. We think that shit works.
Posted by: Moose at April 28, 2008 09:13 PMMaker Faire is nothing like Ren Faire, trust me. (Maybe I'll see you there).
Posted by: Jodi at April 28, 2008 09:31 PMLooking forward to your future blog posts with my legs.. er fingers crossed (for you).
Posted by: Elizabeth at April 28, 2008 10:15 PMAhh the busy-ness! My life is equally busy. Except instead of being pregnant, I'm busy planning a wedding in 3 months.
For a first-trimester ultrasound so you can soooo totally skip the water. They'll be using the dildo-cam, and that one doesn't need the full bladder thing. And if the machine is from this century it STILL doesn't matter -- they did both angles at my 12-week one and my bladder was definitively empty (they made me pee in a cup ahead of time), so I don't know why they are still giving out that drink-til-you-burst instruction. THEY LIE! THEY LIE TO PREGNANT WOMEN! EVIL!
(I did the whole 32 oz with Noah's ultrasound. I didn't make it [seriously almost peed myself in the parking lot, was in frantic tears by the time I got to the waiting room] and ended up sucking water from the bathroom sink tap frantically to refill my poor bladder two minutes before we were called back. Didn't matter, we saw everything just fine. AS WILL YOU!)
(Maternity clothes will be mailed this weekend. I will need Jason's help getting the boxes - plural! - to the store. Yay!)
Posted by: Amalah at April 29, 2008 06:46 AMI hope that the ultrasound includes cake.
Posted by: El at April 29, 2008 07:10 AMDon't sweat the water thing. The u/s place I went to was so backed up for my first scan, my 2:00 appointment translated into me getting called back at 3:45 so I caved somewhere around the 3:00 mark. After the doctor took a look at the screen, she ordered me to go to the bathroom because my bladder was still too full. Good luck!!
Posted by: Pam at April 29, 2008 07:29 AMYah, be prepared for an "internal" ultrasound. The wee bebe is too small to really be seen clearly thru the abdomen, so I'd be surprised if they'd do an external. Can't wait to hear the results! Be prepared - seeing that little heartbeat fluttering will take your breath away.
And may there be cake. Lots of it.
Posted by: Kate at April 29, 2008 08:39 AMI went to Maker Faire last year and I made my very own tinfoil pillbox hat.
