The muggees, wishing they'd had those sock daggers two nights before

Maybe I'm out of touch with what constitutes a good story, or maybe YOU have been jaded by the harsh reality of the modern world, but I really thought there'd be more of a reaction to the whole bit about how Simon and the groom and the best man (the groom's brother) were accosted in San Francisco in the wee small hours of the morning and told to hand over their wallets, get on their knees, put their hands behind their heads [and pray that the gun doesn't go off while pointed at them]. Maybe this kind of story is just not that impressive to you kids these days, what with your newfangled X-treme sports and violent video games, but c'mon people, my boyfriend--the Simon you all know and love--was mugged at gunpoint and taken for about $200! The reason he had so much money on him, by the way, was because earlier that night he'd put everyone's dinner on his credit card and collected cash from the other bachelor party attendees, just to make things easier. And this is what he gets for being magnanamous.

Speaking of which, I would like to say a little something about the concept of karma and it is this: What a sham. Simon got mugged the same day he stopped to help a woman who had spun out on the freeway and hit a retaining wall. And remember last month when we helped rescue a kitten? That was the same day we realized someone had snapped off half of Simon's license plate so they could make off with his registration sticker. On the way to work this very morning, he told me that he'd pulled over yesterday to help with yet another freeway accident, and now I anticipate a herd of elephants will trample our yard and break our garden gnome, Klaus Nomi (what, you expected us to name him Gnome Chomsky?), or worse.

And what have we learned from all of this, boys and girls? That's right: No more good deeds! From here on out it's all selfish, existential nihilism.

OH NO! I've been off the internet radar for a few measly days and I MISSED THE MUGGING. I will go and insert a properly worried and outraged comment on your previous post immediately.

I'd be happy to volunteer my head for the ceremonial breaking of something, um, breakable over my delicate pate. Perhaps that will reverse your karma and tomorrow you'll win the lottery.

Eep. I've been in the thick of a bathroom remodel. Yipes.

Glad he's okay. That's terrifying.

Posted by: Becky at April 1, 2008 04:48 PM

Oh my. First of all, love that lost shot of Simon. Secondly, the mugging is awful and I'm glad Simon's okay, but maybe there was little/no reaction because the idea just seems so unreal? Stuff like that only happens in movies. Or New York. And lastly, go Simon for all the good things he does! I don't think Karma is a zero sum game though, and maybe you don't get the good right away but at some later date when you really, really need it. Then again, the gun *not* going off? That's some good stuff right there.

That mugging is really awful. I tried to comment, but the Internets went all whacky and kicked me off.

Posted by: Janssen at April 1, 2008 05:17 PM

Gosh that is just ridiculously horrible. I am so glad everyone is okay and unscathed. (Everyone is unscathed, right?) Also, did the groom's ID get snatched before or after they got the marriage license?!

Simon definitely has some good karma building. I expect fantastic things to happen to the both of you soon.

actually one thing i was wondering was if the mugging screwed with his head at all, or if it wasn't that bad 'cuz he was with some of his friends and nobody got hurt. . . a couple of years ago i was literally across the street from my house when three dudes jumped and beat the shit out of me, necessitating a trip to the emergency room. . .

pretty much for the next week or two i had trouble sleeping 'cuz every time i'd lay down and close my eyes, i'd picture the scene in my head and get a rush of adrenaline which, apparently, doesn't help much when trying to crash. . .

and for the next couple of months i'd have nightmares about it, while even today i'm not a big fan of walking around at night. . .

of course maybe the psychological crap was 'cuz i actually got beat up, as i was mugged a couple of times when i lived in mexico (once at gunpoint), but i don't recall having nightmares about it. . .

Leah,
Oh. My God.

Hell YES- I was properly horrified by the Mugging and was just thinking about it THIS morning! I hope it did not ruin E and D's wedding. :-(

Posted by: cagey at April 1, 2008 05:35 PM

Well I definitely made the "OMG" face when you told me in person!!

Leah, it was wonderful to meet you after reading your thoughts on this here blog for so many months. Watching you and Simon interact (not to mention your generosity to our mutual friends) really brought home what great parents the two of you will be.

wishing you the best,

A.

I was horrified when I read about the mugging, but couldn't quite make it seem real. I can't imagine being in that moment, having a gun pointed at me. I'm glad they came through ok physically. I hope they are all doing ok mentally.

Now that I think about it, Simon's good karma probably came in the form of his money being taken but not his wallet. The other two guys are out their IDs and credit cards and such, but the thug who had Simon just took his money and threw the wallet down on the street. Also, the mugging happened as they were getting into his car, so it's also pretty lucky that the thugs didn't also take the keys and drive off in it. (Although wouldn't it have been funny if they then got pulled over for having a broken license plate?)

They seem to all being doing fine considering, and Simon said he never really feared for his life or anything. It's just a bummer that they're all out so much money (the best man had just gone to the ATM). Simon said if he knew he'd be out $200 by the end of the night, he would have had more lapdances.

I, however, am pissed as hell and the only thing that stops me from completely losing my shit is the thought that, hey, maybe those guys needed the money to buy Pampers and baby food, or maybe help pay for their mother's funeral...

The way the mugging part was just thrown in I figured you were kidding. Next time please say REAL MUGGING, NO FOOLING. Actually it's better if there is never a next time. The only mugging I'd like him involved in is mugging for the camera like in the pictures. Glad to know he's fine.

I think the reason I commented on it so lightly was that it was a small point in the midst of others. I did not actually visualize the mugging and the gun.

Now that I am doing so, I feel a little sick about it. You guys must have been horribly scared and shaken. I'm sorry.

I'm glad that Simon and the rest are OK, and that you were able to post the above sweet photos.

xoxo

Me too, I didn't picture something so awful and with a loaded weapon, possibly because I have never known anyone to be mugged or seen it in real life. How awful, they must have been so scared.

Oh and I love the little slideshow of the kilt lifting, I'm glad to know that those guys in fact do wear boxers under there or at least that's what I'll keep telling myself.

Give me details on the mugging, I'm sure I would flip my lid!
You wrote it so non-chalante (sp?)that I was thinking, hmm, maybe it ended up not being a big deal in the end? But dude, that sucks! I'm glad that Simon and Co. are safe and that they are only short 200 dollars and not a living breathing human life.

Hi, Leah!

I am still amazed at the mugging. It was easy to let it be overshadowed last weekend in the midst of all the fun! and love! and cake! but I'm still horrified at the thought of the guys on the ground and a gun. Especially since K and I had this absurdly nonchalant chat on our way to the BART about feeling just fine and dandy safe in the city and blah blah hubris hubris her husband's being MUGGED.

Posted by: Erin at April 2, 2008 07:08 AM

The hell?? I really have no words except for that. That is so terrible. I hope they are all OK.

Posted by: Heather B. at April 2, 2008 07:59 AM

Maybe it's the old "My sister needs a nose job" based robbery?

Posted by: will at April 2, 2008 08:44 AM

I think it's that, for me, I could not think of a more appropriate reaction than to shit my pants and shut the laptop in the hopes that NOOOOO, THAT CANNOT BE REAL.

Posted by: jonniker at April 2, 2008 06:33 PM

Wow, that is scary. The only time I was accosted was in New Orleans on Esplanad. I was running with my husband and these little punks wacked me with a stick and it hurt. My husband kept running and had to yell at me to keep running, I wanted to scream "How dare you, you little f***ing punks!" Luckily, my husband is smarter than I am.

Posted by: Kim at April 2, 2008 07:44 PM

Okay, yes, with those extra details, very scary. (I think it was just the way you worded the entry.) I'm glad everyone is alright! Are you still loving your new hair cut?

Posted by: Sara at April 2, 2008 10:29 PM

Karma is one of those things people like to believe in, but there are other factors at play in the universe. Not all of them are rewarding or pleasant. I'm glad Simon and the guys weren't hurt. I hope the experience doesn't completely end his career of spreading love and fairy dust to others.

Thanks for posting only the PG version of the photos. Not in the mood for sausage today.

Luckily, the Nerd and I picked up our marriage license on Monday, three days before The Mugging.

Also, luckily, nobody was hurt. Whew!

Posted by: Emily at April 3, 2008 09:26 PM

Leah, far be it from me to shatter your last shreds of faith in humanity and make you totally lose your shit, but the dude with the gun had a grill that would turn Fitty Cent green with envy (and, as my brother noted as the only other possible description he could provide of the muggers, a Pittsburgh Pirates hat), so I doubt he was spending that dough on Pampers or on medicine for his sick Granny.

Posted by: Doola! at April 3, 2008 09:47 PM

I was all prepared to post something about the shocking mugging and karmic injustice, but the little flipbook at the end done run it slap out of my head...
