100 Gold Stars and a Semicolon Deposed

And the award for list of movies most likely to make me cry goes to...no name slob, who tapped into my preference for cry-because-life's-so-unfair movies over cry-because-life's-so-beautiful movies. She mentioned Brokeback Mountain, Eternal Sunshine..., and Lost in Translation, and to that I'll add, notably, The End of the Affair and Jude the Obscure because, man, each of those just knocked me flat with the tragedy of capital-T True but capital-I Impossible love. I used to pester Simon with deep philosophical questions along the lines of which is worse, (a) unrequited love or (b) love that is completely and utterly requited but, due to any number of circumstances, also doomed for eternity, and I don't think I ever really heard his answer because I was so caught up in the tragedy of requited-yet-impossible love to concentrate on anything but burying my face in a pillow because, come on, isn't that way sadder than mere pining? Just hearing that six-note theme from the Brokeback Mountain score is...just...gosh, will you excuse me for a moment? I think there's something in my eye...

So, one hundred gold stars for no name slob! The rest of you didn't even know it was a contest, did you? Don't feel bad, neither did I. Apparently this whole week is Delurking Week (again? already?), and that last entry did made quick work of luring you lurkers, as you've already beat last year's record, as well as the record for daily pageviews. Nice to meet you, lurkers! And welcome, new readers! Let me show you what a comfortable and open space we have here by telling you that I got my period today and it was glorious. If a camera crew had been on location in my bathroom, it could have filmed a cry-because-life-is-so-beautiful short film. And then if it'd followed me to work, it would haveplenty of material for a full-length cry-because-post-MC-cramps-are-so-awful docudrama.

Honestly, it's not too bad considering that the last time I bled from my ladyparts it was fifty times worse, and this time the news is nothing but good. Semicolon, you are temporarily dethroned as my favorite punctuation mark; come back again in three to five days. And that, my friends, is the last you'll hear from me on the subject until I have some actual news to share, thank you and goodnight!

If you haven't delurked yet but want to play along, feel free to do so on this entry. Here is your prompt: Tell me, when was the last time you got your period? Anyone? Hello?

*crickets*

De-Lurking to tell you about bleeding. How nice.

December of '06 was the last time I got my period. My gyno changed my birth control pills to Loestrin and it just stopped all together. Which mind you, when you're trying NOT to get pregnant, and all of a sudden you stop getting a period for no real reason.

Freaks. You. The. Hell. Out.

The first few months I probably should have just bought EPTs in bulk.

Why, I'll be happy to tell you! I know I'm not a lurker but I'm just so dang happy about not having a period since June of 2006. Yup. I could definitely get used to this.

Posted by: beck at January 10, 2008 08:32 PM

We watched the new Jane Eyre tonight with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson and. . .we both cried. I thought of you. Does it get better than Jane Eyre? Not if it's Jane Eyre with Toby Stephens.

Posted by: Janssen at January 10, 2008 08:36 PM

Oh! No lurker, but I REMEMBER the after MC period.

I am due any day now, and NO I'M NOT GRUMPY. OR SENSITIVE.

Posted by: Angella at January 10, 2008 08:49 PM

Not a lurker, but hi anyhow. Have a great Friday and happy weekend.

Posted by: Elizabeth at January 10, 2008 10:25 PM

January 2nd after my fourth dose of Plan B which I swore never to use again after the first, second and third times. Hey, I'm like your evil alter ego who lives in a craptastic apartment and really doesn't want to get pregnant. Maybe? No? ;)

Posted by: Oh for shame at January 10, 2008 11:44 PM

Judging by my mood, breakout and cravings for deepfried salty food, its due any minute now!

Posted by: Super Sarah at January 11, 2008 12:12 AM

Maybe it's true what they say about tragedy giving rise to comedy? Because you are coming out with some comedic gold these days. Dethroning the semicolon - hehe!

Then again, maybe I'm easily amused.

And I was just telling my sister about how when I got my last period I was traveling great distances and so I had two bags of pads - one in my suitcase just in case the full one in my backpack ran out. Airport customs must have thought I was a crazy pad lady.

Posted by: Super-S at January 11, 2008 12:48 AM

This morning.

If you need me, I'll be scowling somewhere, shoving salt and chocolate into my face. Heh.

About 27 days ago and I am a raving bitch right now.

Posted by: dorrie at January 11, 2008 08:19 AM

Oh you'll like this then (too good not to laugh at). We recently went to Florida (and we're trying to get pregnant so there's that to keep in mind) over New Years and I didn't drink a drop. Root beer and caffeine-free pepsi and WATER as Mike's entire family boozed it up. I drove us safely to his grandparents house around 12:10 AM, after the party, only to discover upon arriving (around 12:30) that I had JUST started.

You better believe I bought myself a bottle of champagne to enjoy on January 1.

Wow...what a way to delurk. Hi, my name is Andrea, and I also started my period today. My husband and I are also trying for our first baby so, hopefully this will be my last period for a while. Now, if thats not personal, and maybe a little awkward, I don't know what is.

Posted by: Andrea at January 11, 2008 08:39 AM

I've been lurking! Do you really want to know my LMP? How about I tell you how envious I am of your new sewing machine instead?

Posted by: Eleanor Q. at January 11, 2008 09:17 AM

Even though I haven't commented in a while, I've been lurking, even through a name change.

Tearing movies a little after the fact: Untamed Heart, Venus.. and in the realm of TV -- the last ep of 6 Feet Under

August - and it was a heavy one since the one before that was September 2005 (One kid + extended breastfeeding in between).

Posted by: trish at January 11, 2008 09:46 AM

Hello, darlin'. Not sure if I delurked last time, what with the soul-sucking sleep deprivation I've got goin' on.

I think the last time I got my period was right after Christmas (see: extreme sleep dep makes you dumber than you were to begin with). So, yay for periods!

(I am so adding you as a link to my blog. You crack my ass up).

Posted by: Becky at January 11, 2008 09:51 AM

Haven't had my period yet. Can't wait. I jsut wanted to add to the last post about movies that are good for a cry. Here you go.

The Shawshank Redemption, Crash, and Gattaca

Posted by: Dave at January 11, 2008 10:05 AM

I'm not a lurker, but I love how excited I got about sharing my lmp. Just like at the gyne's office (which I can never remember when I'm being grilled about it).

Have a good weekend (my recommends for crampy days is curled up on the couch in front of the fireplace, drinking hot tea).

Posted by: ie at January 11, 2008 10:13 AM

Hi Leah.

Due to not getting my computer fixed in almost a year, I HAVE been lurking around...

But, I'm back to being able to leave comments, and what better one than this post!

Except instead of telling you when I last had my period, I'm pretty regular when it comes to that, thought I'd share this: today, of all days, while taking my pill, I realized a bit too late that the little blue thing fell down the drain.

Now I'm off to search what to do about that, as I don't want to pay for another pack.

Hope 2008 goes well for you. I just had to pop in "When a Man Loves a Woman" to get me to cry a few days ago. Damn those alcoholic love stories.

I'm famous! Too bad I haven't updated my blog in....forever. Hmm.

So anyhow, happy period and happy weekend....maybe with some crying mixed in, if you so choose.

Also, Super-S's story reminded me of the time I got my period at Heathrow and had no supplies, so I had to dig through my tiny stash of British moola (we were just flying through on our way to Rome) to scrounge up 99p for a pack of pads at the airport Boots. And I was tired and greasy and irritable and they asked me my FLIGHT NUMBER at the register and I didn't know it. It was great.

I guess I get no credit (or stars) for having seen Savanah Smiles.

Posted by: will at January 11, 2008 11:21 AM

Haven't got my period yet! *Cartman voice* (South Park episode)

I feel better knowing that Dave hasn't had his yet either.

Will??? -- Please weigh in.

Sadly, it seems to always coincide when I see my bicoastal, San Fran-based boyfriend (the last time being Christmas Day, sweet). Maybe that's some sort of adrenaline-induced reaction, kind of like I how I tend to always get the hiccups the moment I step into the mall. I even tried the whole skip-your-sugar-pill-week remedy twice, which only resulted in making me very ill, getting my period anyway, and sending him to Walgreen's to buy me laxatives. Wow, TMI, even for this blog.

Posted by: Camels & Chocolate at January 11, 2008 12:12 PM

Um, that one up there wasn't me. Guess I need a new name. But I was here first. waaaaaaaaaa

Anyway, to answer your question: Started Saturday the 5th.

Posted by: Alyce at January 11, 2008 12:25 PM

Never had a period of my own. *sniff*

January 7, 2001 - following my second dose of Adriamycin & Cytoxin chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer I had chemotherapy induced menopause.

I'd like to start off by thanking you for teaching me a thing or two about blogging!! I am delurking myself and I now feel pretty creepy about being a lurker!! You are hilarious! However, to answer your question, I was moments away from having a pleasant encounter with my honey pie last night and to my utter surprise aunt flo came over for a visit...bummer!! Since I am not yet in the baby making business, the extent of my emotions over my menstrual cycle is simply disappointment over not getting some!!

Posted by: jill at January 11, 2008 01:38 PM

@ Ted, Perhaps Dave could but his period from Scott Tennorman, just like Cartman bought his pubes.

Posted by: will at January 11, 2008 02:24 PM

July 1 was my LMP and I know that because they ask me every damn time I go to the doctor. Hello? WRITE IT DOWN!

I also know that because it was the day I cried and cried that we weren't having a Leap Day baby and what the hell was wrong with me, not getting pregnant on the first try, for goodness' sake. Um, 8 years is what happened to me. No spring chicken anymore I guess.

Posted by: Brooke at January 11, 2008 02:36 PM

@Will -- Do you think there's PERIOD Fair in Fort Collins also?

Posted by: Ted at January 11, 2008 03:31 PM

I'm not going to touch the subject of periods, but instead comment on the wrong entry to provide a movie suggestion (even though someone else suggested it): Atonement. Definitely a life's-so-unfair movie, and I left the theater feeling completely depressed. I didn't cry but I was near tears, if that counts.

Posted by: Stefanie at January 11, 2008 03:43 PM

November 27, thank you very much.

Posted by: Amanda Brown at January 11, 2008 04:22 PM

LNMP would probably have been sometime in 2005, maybe November? I can't remember. I was on continuous LoEstrin for 7 years prior to conceiving the Beaner, and went back on it as soon as possible after he was born, which I think was about a year later. Not having periods is EXCELLENT.

Posted by: Lori at January 11, 2008 06:41 PM

December 28th. Not bad considering my last one prior had been September 30, 2006. Breastfeeding and pregnancy has its perks.

Posted by: cagey at January 13, 2008 03:58 PM

How about getting your period on your honeymoon.
Yep, my husband was as surprised as I was!

Posted by: African Blossom at January 14, 2008 03:24 AM

Sorry, that previous post was just so shocking I had to post it twice!

Posted by: African Blossom at January 14, 2008 03:27 AM

I love how you describe the coming of the period as glorious. Because that's the last word I think of when I'm stuck in a business meeting and I realise that achy tummy feeling I've had for the last hour? Yeah that would be the cramping.

Posted by: Leaf, probably... at January 14, 2008 02:30 PM

Three things I learned today:

1) That "to lurk" is something more than "to lie in wait in a place of concealment especially for an evil purpose" (m-w)

2) That some people stop getting some during their periods...

3) That somebody (Ted?) else besides me (who lives there) knows about Fort Collins! May be this is obvious 'cause you've talk about it before and the fact that I don't know it shows I don't lurk as much as it seems...

PS: My last period was exactly a week from today, and it wasn't pretty. But again, it never is.

Posted by: Jala' at January 14, 2008 05:27 PM

After watching Brokeback Mountain I turned to my husband and said 'wow, can you imagine if someone loved you like that'.

* Crickets * indeed!!

Oh, and Dec 27th.

Posted by: Chris Cactus at January 16, 2008 05:05 AM

January 2nd. Whoot! Because of you though, I actually had to think about it. So thank you!

Posted by: Heather B. at January 17, 2008 04:58 AM

My last period was on November 13th. My first miscarriage from my first pregnancy was last night. I'm hoping my next period shows up pretty quickly here so I can get back to the business of baby making. Now that your GLORIOUS period is here, I'll be making sure to keep an eye on your baby making progress :)
