Calling All Mofos

It's that time of year again! (And thank goodness because it's also that time of the month again and I don't have it in me to post a entry of any substance. Is it naptime yet? Where's my sundae?)

1455218782_b114206066.jpg

The above image, brazenly stolen from JenB's Flickr (stealing from Flickr is the new black!), is a call for comments, whether you're a by-the-definition lurker or not. New readers, old readers, virgin commenters, and commenters who have been around the block a few times (you know who you are *cough*sluts*cough*), say hey today, okay? Note: You do not have to be a mofo to delurk, and delurking will not make you a mofo. Fear not the tarnishing of the reputation you've worked hard to maintain. You too, sluts.

In the past*, I've donated a dollar to charity for each unique commenter during a delurk, but something tells me that's not a very good idea what with the mortgage and car payment and international travel and new (cat) baby. Gotta save up for the kibble and the nickel bags of nip, yo. In theory, the charity promise is supposed to pull at your heartstrings and bait you into outing yourselves, but this time I'm relying on flattery to do the trick. A few eyelash batts? A little sweet-talk? Huh, baby?

*blink blink* You know I love you, honey. *blink blink* Come on and whisper a little something in mama's ear. *blink*

I'll be applying lip gloss all day, that's how much I'll be thinking about you.

To liven up the comments, how about we make it a little more interesting, and by "interesting" I mean all about ME ME ME! That's why you come here in the first place, right? Seriously, though, I know I always find myself attracted to or intrigued by people with whom I have something in common, even if it's just one little insignificant thing, like the time I read on Lulu's site that she liked to smell people's cocktails at bars and how weird was that, and I was all, "Me too! We are soul-sistahs!" and she was all, "Um, yeah...".

So whether it's because I enjoy the warm-fuzzies of recognition or because I need constant validation or because I much prefer to read sites that have me nodding my head rather than banging it on my keyboard until my brow looks like a map of the magical land of Dyslexia, there's always at least a sliver of similarity between me and the blog authors I frequent, and I'm willing to bet our Venn Diagram--yours and mine--has a grassy little middle ground too. So tell me, are you also afraid of the vampires behind the department store makeup counters? Are you baby crazy? Do you write about your personal life on the internet? Do you have a box of kitten-sized party frocks hiding under your bed?

*You may notice, as I did, that delurking has traditionally been a week-long event. And also in January, not October. After a little more research, I see that this iteration is Schmutzie's doing, and also that she created buttons in a variety of colors to coordinate with my site because she's thoughtful like that. You may also notice that I don't have time to deal with that sort of thing, as I am currently running late for my scheduled appointment to stand in front of the elevator and tap my foot and check my watch and curse the gods and slowly go insane. Thank you for understanding.

That's about all I have to say about that.

I've commented once or twice before, so not exactly a lurker, but since you specified that lurker-ness is not necessary for a comment here, I'll answer the questions anyway. And briefly. No, I'm not afraid of vampires in any location. Yes-ish, I like babies but I'm still getting to the officially "crazy" state. Yes, I write about my personal life on the internet. No, I do not own even one kitten-size party frock. This last thing strikes me as tragic.

Posted by: Jess at October 3, 2007 01:56 PM

I've commented a couple times but mostly I'm a lurker. As for similarities between us (even though I don't really have a blog) .... um ... I too have a black cat. My black cat is named Molly, even though Molly is a he.

Posted by: Martha at October 3, 2007 02:14 PM

We have a love of champagne very much in common, or so your flick stream would like me to believe.

Also, I grew up in the Bay Area and although I left when I was 11, the soft spot I have for the area remains. And so aside from your incredible grasp on the English language, I come here because it's nice to be reminded of a place I didn't get to know too well but will always remember fondly.

What international travel plans are you cooking up?

Posted by: Jennie at October 3, 2007 02:16 PM

I was so not 'um, yeah!' I was excited! And we talked about how lovely you are and so blonde! and so tall! and so pretty! and what a dork I was! and then, whoops, I fell down the (metaphorical) stairs and completed the total embarrassing event where I declared my love for Leah, the internet queen.

Posted by: Lulu at October 3, 2007 02:18 PM

Martha--My aunt has a boy cat named Betsy and my grandma had a girl cat named Bingo. My brother and I call my dad's big boy cat Mindy, but mostly just to be pests.

Jennie--We're going to England for Thanksgiving to see the new niece! SO EXCITED.

Posted by: Leah at October 3, 2007 02:19 PM

Lulu--I miss you. What up?

Posted by: Leah at October 3, 2007 02:20 PM

I'm a relatively new reader, and I think I came here via a photo of you with Kristin at Blogher. Is that out of the realm of possibility? Because if it is, I have no idea how I got here. Where are my pants?

Posted by: Tamara at October 3, 2007 02:25 PM

Kristin is a great thing for two people to have in common!

Posted by: Leah at October 3, 2007 02:27 PM

You KNOW I love you baby!

I'm *constantly* nodding in agreement with what you say/do and that you must another one of my soul sistas!

Except for the clothes for your cat. I totally don't do that ;)

But you know I love babies, or I wouldn't keep popping them out :)

Posted by: Angella at October 3, 2007 02:30 PM

I've posted a couple comments in the past. Not sure how I found you - I think through the SlackMistress, but I'm not sure how I found her either. I adore your writing, Leah! I am also a Bay Area resident. Sans cats, but have a giant dog who thinks she's a cat. Keep on being you!

Posted by: HoneybeeSF at October 3, 2007 02:33 PM

I don't know if I'm a lurker or not... I can't 'member the last time I commented here.

Here's something we have in common: we end some of our casual sentences in 'yo.'

That just our steelo.

Posted by: mae at October 3, 2007 02:39 PM

I love reading your blog but have yet to comment.
So here I go ...

I can relate to your elevator situation. I can't even talk about it without getting massively frustrated so I'll leave it at that.

Posted by: Hills at October 3, 2007 02:46 PM

I don't have cat dress up clothes, but only because my cat would never submit to such indignities without me feeling the wrath of her claws. But if she would, I'd dress her up in a heartbeat. I think she'd look especially fabulous as a tiny Queen Elizabeth, especially if I could get her to sit up and hold a sceptre.

I fear the makeup vultures. I suspect they'd be full of disdain about the minimal amount of foundation and lip gloss I wear and they'd try to give me a full on scary Prom Face.

That aside, probably the weirdest thing we have in common is that our man-partners look oddly alike. I'd post a photo as evidence but I'm not sure how mine would feel about being plastered all over the internet.

Cheers!

Posted by: sjb at October 3, 2007 02:50 PM

I just broke something. A glass something. It shattered all over the floor. And the Lancome vampires scare the crap out of me.

Posted by: Moose at October 3, 2007 02:54 PM

Hmm things I have in common with you, photography of course, (I believe we even have the same camera!!), love of sushi, living in the east bay (I am just across the hills) and tallness (I know the torture of trying to find pants that are long enough).

Posted by: MicheleLouise at October 3, 2007 03:01 PM

Makeup and perfume vampires scare me. But you know what scares me most? Makeup ninjas. Those women are so stealth!

Posted by: hello insomnia at October 3, 2007 03:19 PM

I love tuna (as far as sushi is concerned) with a passion that does not extend to many other foods.

Posted by: Janssen at October 3, 2007 03:26 PM

Holy shit Tamara is funny.

What we have in common:
- long legs
-intense appreciation for good Italian food, beautiful men, and inner geekiness
-empathy
-flakiness
-a tendency toward neurosis
-kind souls
-intense belief in small happiness.

You're one of my true friendships in the blogosphere. But you knew that.

Posted by: Kristin at October 3, 2007 03:34 PM

I don't think we actually have much in common at all. I'm blatantly using you for a fix of living someplace else (such a lovely place, SF) and gorgeous houses.

I am terrified of the department makeup vampires though.

Posted by: Jhianna at October 3, 2007 04:01 PM

Hello, delurking is something I've procrastinated with.

So...

-we are both blond
-we both like making copious amounts of sushi
-we like pictures
-I lived in Berkeley once.

I think that is all I can muster for now.

Posted by: Liat at October 3, 2007 04:13 PM

I'm a definate lurker here. Quite certain I found your blog through Kristin's TallnLucky (Hey there!) and then found her again through a comment on your blog...weird.

I guess the thing we must have in common is a love of good writing (Yours and K's), there are various other things I'm sure, but I'm not a good on-the-fly listmaker.

Posted by: Reid at October 3, 2007 04:13 PM

You were my first.
I found you via a misguided google search, before I had ever heard of blogging. I fell in love with your site, many of your links, and then started my own blog.
Thanks for popping my blog-cherry.

Posted by: Amanda at October 3, 2007 04:16 PM

I have no choice BUT to be baby crazy. And I stole your decorate-a-onesie baby shower idea.

Posted by: hue at October 3, 2007 04:22 PM

Posted by: Dotty at October 3, 2007 05:14 PM

Delurking for today! Hello!

Posted by: Dawn at October 3, 2007 05:15 PM

I used to comment quite regularly but a few months ago changed my job and with that came a much longer commute and less chance to get online. So I might be a lurker again.

Things we have in common:

Mostly it's about you and I being in sort of the same phase of life right now and you write about things that I'm also going through and I can relate with.
Besides that I think we could totally go on a photography shoot together. I love your pictures.
We're both blonde and fair.
I also eat cereal for dinner and I love it.

Posted by: Teej at October 3, 2007 05:21 PM

Hmph...well, I do love cats. And cereal for dinner. Actually, any kind of breakfast for dinner. I take pictures. And I'm creeped out by the sound of someone using fingernail clippers. Oh, and I'm afraid of dolls, clowns, and puppets.

Posted by: FW Sunshine at October 3, 2007 06:16 PM

Delurking--

Definitely scared of the makeup vampires. As I often remind my mom, "Do you really want someone who looks like that to help you with your makeup?"

I also often eat cereal for dinner.

And! And! I live in an older, (relatively) crooked house.

Found you through Amalah.

Posted by: Mandee at October 3, 2007 06:54 PM

Hiya!
Delurking at last!

I am a picture-taking, cat-loving mama here in NYC. We have two cats, sadly lacking in wardrobe and one human baby who has plenty to wear, and I have been tempted to put some of her clothes on the cats.

I also once went to Tiffany's imagining that I was buying jewelry for the kitties.

Bye-ee!

Posted by: Di at October 3, 2007 06:56 PM

Makeup vampires give me the heebie-jeebies!

Posted by: whoorl at October 3, 2007 06:59 PM

Hi! I don't comment much, but read the blog daily. I started reading when I found out you used to live in Utah with all the Mormons just like me and I love the way you write.

Some other things we have in common: I love my job, my toenails are always painted and I kick ass at Tetris.

And I'm super excited about sweet juniper's one on the way, as I'm sure you are... :)

Posted by: Monica at October 3, 2007 07:16 PM

I can't remember how I found your blog! It was a long time ago.

I've made a lot of friends (and will marry one of 'em) through the internets but you're my first real friend I made through blogging I think. As for similarities? You're living where I used to live, in the industry in which I used to work (only you have the job I wanted, not the one I had). And we both have a predilection for rule-following.

Happy delurking day! Does that make me a mofo?

Posted by: Emily at October 3, 2007 08:07 PM

Hey!! I'm not sure if I have ever commented before. I have been reading your blog since pre-Simon days. You are a very talented photographer. I too love babies!! Especially my beautiful 7 1/2 month old daughter. I also have one siamese cat named Kobe.

Posted by: Monica at October 3, 2007 09:03 PM

I am De-Lurking. I do in fact write about my personal life on the internet. Which at the moment includes trying to contact The Governator for a charity event and being the clerk at a liquor store. I want a kitten. And a puppy. have you tried humming a tune while waiting with people for the elevator to see who hums, taps, sings with you?

Posted by: Decoybetty at October 3, 2007 10:12 PM

Considered me de-lurked...

I too love the sweet little kitties. I have two and a rambunctious puppy. It's a household of puppy-kitty love!!

However, do love the make-up vampires, especially the ones at the MAC counter. I love to go, target the most twacked out makeup guy (always the guys) and let them do their thing. It's always a good time.

...and now back to lurking.

Posted by: Frobeast at October 3, 2007 10:34 PM

I'm baby crazy, but crazy because I can't have anymore. My fiance was 'snipped' 19 years ago--so the plumbing has been turned off for some time and probably won't work again.

So I love to sniff the baby heads of all of my friends and occasional strangers.

Posted by: Michele at October 3, 2007 10:38 PM

Hi Leah!!

Well, unlike you I have only recently (and somewhat hesitantly) started writing about my life on the Internet. I recently posted about having cankles (even though the rest of me is slender), which marked a HUGE step in baring my soul to the Internet :). However, much like you, I tend to make somewhat quirky observations of the world around me and I love sharing them with other people. While I don't know you personally, I think we are both fiercely appreciative of (and loyal to) the wonderful people in our respective lives. We also both love martinis and despise beer. We are also both totally addicted to your blog :)

Oh, and if you happen to have double-jointed thumbs, that's another check in the "things we have in common" slot....

Posted by: Brooke at October 3, 2007 11:13 PM

There are vampires behind make up counters???

Posted by: theotherbear at October 3, 2007 11:25 PM

I comment quite frequently, but I still wanted to be apart of the mofo'ing commenting.
To be honest we don't actually have much in common at all. Our lives are pretty much completely opposite and I think that is part of the reason I am so smitten with you and your life. I love your honesty, and your house, and your easy going yet hectic life, I love your garden, and your prince that treats you like a princess, I love how much of a grammar nazi you are and that you are close to your family. I mean hey, can this comment be anymore about you! you! you!? haha :) Thanks for letting us all share in the life that you and Simon have created for yourselves.

Posted by: stephanie brown at October 4, 2007 04:24 AM

Hmm I'm in love with an American guy. Thats about as similar as I can figure we are. Oh and we have that same cardigan that I pointed out once :)

Posted by: A girl you know at October 4, 2007 04:33 AM

I too write about my personal life on the internet. I don't have kitten frocks but I do dress my dog up for a Halloween contest every year. You can see all the craziness at www.fortgreenepups.org, click on events and pick a year of "The Pupkin" and enjoy!

Posted by: Kizz at October 4, 2007 04:54 AM

Aside from having general demographics in common (age, cat clothes collection, baby lust), you're an editor. I think that I should have been an editor. Instead I do legal research. You see, nothing sounds more appealing to me than getting paid to remove an unnecessary comma.

Posted by: Lisa at October 4, 2007 06:03 AM

reading you for years. like the honesty. (also i broke up with bf same sort of time you did. and then hooked up with a guy called simon around the same time you did (do realise your simon isnt called simon in real life)).

Posted by: azuradec at October 4, 2007 06:16 AM

delurking to say that i am also tall. and i know you drink champagne, so if you like brut or extra dry, then we have everything in common that's really important in life.

Posted by: alison at October 4, 2007 07:03 AM

For the Venn diagram:

I live in sin (though I am not religious so it's not MY sin) with my boyfriend and our big black cat named Biggie Purrs. We are about to buy a house together.

I am not normally baby crazy, but I watched Knocked Up last night and damn...I sort of want one.

Posted by: rosalicious at October 4, 2007 08:12 AM

One of the makeup counter people at the only local dept. store is obviously trans-gender at 6'+ and with a prominent adams apple. (S)he makes the regular makeup counter vampires seem downright cuddly by comparison.

Oh yeah, I'm delurking to share that important bit of information.

Posted by: Virginia Gal at October 4, 2007 08:21 AM

Not a lurker but I would like to think that we have the love of our separate houses and gardens in common. Meaning... you love your house and your garden and I love mine, but yours is pretty cool, too. ;)

Posted by: Elizabeth at October 4, 2007 08:22 AM

I'm not falling for this, off season, one day, delurking business. Traditional, January, week long, delurking is preferred. (Remind me then.) --- Thank you very much.

Posted by: Ted at October 4, 2007 08:33 AM

Okay, okay, you got me...I've been lurking! I first found your site linked from another blog (can't remember who that was anymore), and one of the first posts I read was about how you had discovered workout videos on demand. That prompted me to explore my recently acquired on demand cable...and it was so exciting! Granted, I tell myself I'll take advantage of that feature much more than I actually do, but it's nice to know it's there. And I have you to thank for that!

Posted by: LN at October 4, 2007 08:40 AM

I started reading your site regularly when you were writing about rearranging the shelves in your library. You have a library! I even found myself browsing your shelves (two copies of Atlas Shrugged?). It's nice to see someone else who likes to be surrounded by a fortress of books.

But this is a bit more specific: "25. I cannot leave this life until I have at least tried out for Jeopardy." I auditioned for Jeopardy, passed the test, but was never called to be on the show. (I blame the fact that I panicked and took too long to answer the "tell us five things about yourself" portion of the form we had to fill out, and ended up leaving it blank.) The weird thing? I'm glad I was never called, even though I had always wanted to audition. Somehow it was enough just to pass that test.

When do we get our nerd awards?

Posted by: zan at October 4, 2007 09:26 AM

Posted by: Kate at October 4, 2007 11:29 AM

Uh...I'm a day late. Is that okay? And because I'm contrary, I'm going to list some common points, but with a twist. Woo!

Common ground: I edit.
Point of divergence: I miss my deadlines regularly.

Common ground: I once worked at a major bookstore chain.(Haven't all editors, more or less?)
Point of divergence: It was Borders. And I kind of liked it. I still miss it at times. Ah, the sweet luxury of leaving work with stories about crazy people, rather than extra work to do at home.

Common ground: I love sparkly white-grape-based alcoholic beverages.

Posted by: Alison at October 4, 2007 11:38 AM

I can't remember if I've actually posted or just wanted to. I grew up in West Jordan and I thankfully got away. I live in Las Vegas now but I'm always looking for "greener" pastures. I love having parties but not getting ready for them. I love taking pictures, good friends and good food.

Posted by: Laura at October 4, 2007 12:10 PM

I haven't had a chance to comment lately. It has been a busy summer! I think that we are more different than similar. You are probably a foot taller than I am, and you eat when it is absolutely necessary and I eat based on what time it is and if I have a craving (I need to work on that). I wish that I could baby crazy. I do admire women that enjoy and excel at being mothers (like Amanda).

What we seem to have in common is an interest in pictures, traveling, writing, and cats (and we both recently moved). I guess that's good enough.

Posted by: Green Eyes at October 4, 2007 12:16 PM

This is definitely not de-lurking (hi! comment slut!) but I thought I'd say hi anyway. I think I found you through Krissa, but I don't remember where I found Krissa. I started reading her just before she met Stuart, and you very shortly thereafter.

We have in common:

blond hair
blue eyes
kitty love
baby lust
inherent anti-social tendencies

Have a good non-seasonal, day-long(ish) delurking party!

Posted by: Ky Eliza at October 4, 2007 12:50 PM

We have in common:
- An obsessive need to take gratuitous photographs
- A thing for dark and handsome men
- A love of older homes
- A jonesing for giant burritos

and, finally

- That we both took Holly's advice about the CG Lipslicks. I've been obsessively reapplying for about two weeks now.

Posted by: Kimberly at October 4, 2007 01:54 PM

Not quite a virgin, but certainly not a commenter slut. Perhaps a commenter-prude?
Yes, I am afraid of the make-up vampires. (But not the fake goth-I "really" drink blood-moody vampire types.) I am also baby crazy of both the cat and child varieties, but no cat clothes because that is just weird. I too have dance nights but I don't regret all the time I wasted on So You Think You Can Dance. And you aren't alone when it comes to waiting to eat until you are about to pass out. Lastly, I am not an editor in real life, but deep in my heart I long for the possibility.

i think i first felt a connection when i recognized a beautiful, smart, witty, talented and utterly fabulous woman who shares some of my insecurities. plus a mutual appreciation for jen and tonic and will. i'm often the woman behind the camera, too. and i don't know which i love more - champagne or honey martinis.

really, i'm living vicariously through you - your job, your house, your boyfriend, your cat, your garden, your hot tub, your wardrobe, your camera, your travels, your friends. *mwah!*

rock on, yo.

Posted by: chrissy at October 5, 2007 07:12 AM

What is this makeup of which you speak? Department stores? hmmm, sounds familiar but I just can't place it.

I don't blog. Why bother when there are so many other talented people doing it so much better than I could. Besides, writing a blog would take away from my time spent reading blogs. as if

I'm from the Bay Area, and love hearing about it in your posts.

I don't have kitty-sized frocks. But that is only because I can't handle the frantic running with the ears pinned back that happens when we try to put (say, a headband with antlers) on anything adorable. I wish we could, but no.

Posted by: Alyce at October 5, 2007 09:51 AM

Posted by: Jason at October 5, 2007 01:16 PM

I found your blog a month or so ago. I now read it often, for a glimpse of how organized, tidy people live. I don't know how you do it. (But I want to figure it out, or just at least borrow the experience of it for a few moments here and there.) I adore your house and garden, and your photography. And your photography of your house and garden!

I have my blog as an alternative to writing too many letters home to various family/friend types, as I'm currently living overseas from Canada. I'm discovering it's a lot of fun to write a blog.

So yeah. Thanks for the entertaining writing and jealousy-inducing photographs.
