Quadrofelia
Hello!
Can spotty blog attendance be made up for by kittens? Let's see, shall we?

Now that the kittens are old enough to be farmed out to loving homes, we're conflicted. The tabbyish boy was an early favorite, but partly because five weeks ago he seemed the least likely to go blind of extreme eye encrustation. Now that they're all healthy, though, we're weeble-wobbling between the orange one and the black one (both the tabby and the tortie are too fluffy for us).
One the one hand paw, the ginger cat is the one we're both drawn to. I've always wanted an orange cat. On the other paw, his feet are huge and his legs are looong and we're afraid that given a few months and a healthy diet of house moths he'll be as big as a pony and Alpha as all get out, and we don't want to ruin Eve's blissful existence by sticking her with a hotshot Tom.
On the other paw, we have the black baby, the runt, a mini-Eve if ever there was one. She's cute and bitty and, although she didn't capture our hearts the way her brother did, that's like saying I like the chocolate chip mint ice cream just a little less than I like the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream; I can't go wrong. On the fourth paw, are we pushing our luck with two black cats? What to do!
Note: Like too much ice cream, too much kitten is bound to be regretted sooner or later, so don't even suggest we take both, although I'm sure they'd be delicious.

(Dramatization. Do not attempt.)
Which one would you choose? Perhaps this is another one for the expert.
Posted by Leah at September 27, 2007 11:26 AMI personally want them all for myself. No kitties for you! All for me! Except I don't think 700 square feet is enough room for two.
You could always see how the orange one and Eve get along after a few days. Perhaps if they meet early on enough (when he's still smaller) it'll establish her as the Alpha cat?
Posted by: El at September 27, 2007 12:13 PMForget 1 or 2, I say you take them all. You can't split up brothers and sisters now, can you?
Posted by: Crystal at September 27, 2007 12:47 PMI vote orange.
Posted by: Jennie at September 27, 2007 12:53 PMDamn you, Crystal. For reading my mind.
Posted by: Leah at September 27, 2007 01:02 PMIf a stranger's two cents count, I would suggest taking the itty-bitty black one because black cats are harder to get adopted out. (Silly notions about bad luck, or some such thing.)
Either way, congratulations.
:)
I think you have to pick the one who had to suffer the indignity of having his entire cute cat head in Simon's mouth.
Also, thanks for the warm welcome. I feel like I have taken off stilettos and tight leather and stripped down to my yoga pants, and it's awesome.
Posted by: Kristin at September 27, 2007 01:23 PMI vote for the orange one since you already have a black one. Or, just adopt them all and let them run amok in your giant yard - don't want to be separating siblings now, do we? I LOVE the pics and it so makes me want a kitten again!! (The last two cats that we've adopted/that have adopted us have been full-grown and while they are wonderful, there's something so snuggly and cute and playful about a kitten and the endless ball of energy that they are.)
Posted by: Audrey at September 27, 2007 01:45 PMObvs I am biased, but I say ginger. We're great craic.
Posted by: Catherine at September 27, 2007 01:59 PMdelurking to say:
I have a particular fondness for orange kittens, with their sweet pink noses and paw pads, but I am going to join the "keep them both" crowd. Lonely kitten = sad.
Posted by: FW Sunshine at September 27, 2007 02:02 PMI'm biased but I say go for the tabbies. They DO seem to get huge, though (I'm on my 4th orange/orange-point tabby male and every last one is "tall" and prone to getting big) but my experience has been that they're very, very sweet tempered and if you get them when they're kittens they just end up big loveable clowns rather than aggressively alpha.
Posted by: monkey at September 27, 2007 02:12 PMOh dear. That's a wonderful/awful decision to have to make if there ever was one.
They're all adorable, obviously, but I'd have to vote orange. Not only because I have red hair myself, but because we had an orange boy cat for several years, and he was the sweetest, most affectionate, most doglike (as in, following us around the house and coming when we called) cat I've ever known. He was beloved by many friends of ours who were avowedly NOT cat people. And I had a slew coworkers echo the sentiment that orange boys are among the most friendly of all cats. I really don't know if that's strictly true or not, but based on my personal experience I'd believe it.
Also, he did grow up hale and healthy and a bit on the bigger side,
but certainly not monstrous. Here he is if you care to see:

(FYI, the only reason we don't have him now is that we're living in
Rome and he couldn't come. :( But he's now living a very happy life with my boyfriend's family...)
In any case, good luck, congratulations, and I envy you! :)
Posted by: nonameslob at September 27, 2007 03:40 PMWhy am I deathly allergic to cats? WHY? (*shakes fist at sky*)
I'm another vote for the one thing you didn't want us to vote for: both.
Posted by: Clink at September 27, 2007 03:52 PMI've had 2 ginger kittens before. Both were the sweetest little things ever. So I vote for the ginger kitty. (However if it really was me having to choose I would go with the cat with the nicest personality).
Posted by: theotherbear at September 27, 2007 04:01 PMThe black one! Like someone else mentioned, people can be superstitious weirdos and that one might have a harder time finding a home. Plus, a matching pair of two black cats = so much adorableness!
Posted by: sjb at September 27, 2007 04:09 PMIf only we could make them sit still enough to be bookends!
(No worries about the black one not getting adopted. If we dont' take her, the foster parents will look for another "special" person. If no one presents him or herself, they'll keep her.)
Posted by: Leah at September 27, 2007 04:18 PMOooh, I have to concur on the tabbies being really dog-like. My parents have two tabbies right now-one is extremely intelligent and an awesome mouser and fairly affectionate. The other one is honestly like a dog, to the point where my father calls him our "cog". Their predecessor was very affectionate and could do parlour tricks...my father taught him how to shake hands, sit and stand up on his back legs to the command "up".
My Julius isn't as smart as Babu (he of the parlour tricks) but also comes running in response to his name being called.
Of them all, only the very stupid one (Goondoo) is a true lapcat, though.
Okay, I'm going to stop myself before I turn into Jean Tisdale.
Posted by: monkey at September 27, 2007 04:26 PMIt's so hard to decide! Me, I'd go for the tabby, but I have 2 so I'm a little biased. I used to desperately want an orange kitty but mine have some orange so I deal. So I say go for the orange. Either way, be prepared for the tabbyness of having to be in the middle of everything.
And awwwwwwwwww. If I lived nearby I'd have to just overrule the boy's decision to not get any more cats.
Actually, I have a better picture of me eating a cat head.
Scarey...I know.
Oh it has to be the ginger, I have such a weakness for ginger kitties (and men - but don't tell!) I am desperate for a cat now that we are all settled and own a home and all that but for some reason my husband is all "its such a responsibility". Um, HELLLLOOOOO we have a child, surely we are capable of taking care of a cute, furry, cuddly kitten?
Posted by: Super Sarah at September 27, 2007 05:16 PMNom nom nom?
Posted by: Tim at September 27, 2007 05:27 PMI'm a sucker for ginger cats, so I'd pick him (big paws or not).
Though I'd try to keep them all.
Posted by: Brandi at September 28, 2007 04:58 AMI think that Eve should decide!
Posted by: Lisa at September 28, 2007 05:56 AMOh your pictures make me want to scoop the fluffy tortie one up and take it home! I had to get rid of my cats because of my husband's allergies. :-(
My vote is for the black one. It seems like it would be easier to match softpaw caps with black than with orange. BTW, are you still using those?
Posted by: Andi at September 28, 2007 06:16 AMOh, the ginger cat, definitely. Every ginger cat I have ever known is AWESOME, and he soundslike he'll be like my lil' boy, all long and lean with big paws. He's inhcredibly dog-like and affectionate and so much fun. He plays fetch!
Posted by: N at September 28, 2007 06:24 AMI vote orange! I've always wanted a sweet little marmalade kitty and then I could live vicariously through you!
Posted by: Sarah at September 28, 2007 07:29 AMOne black cat cancels out the bad luck of the other. With two black cats, that means you almost don't have a cat at all. That's where the orange one comes in. But what do I know? I'm a dog person. Not to be confused with dog-person, where I'd eat my food off the floor and poop in the back yard.
I love big orange cats. They always seem to have a great disposition. Good luck and whomever you choose will be the right one for you!
Posted by: andrea at September 28, 2007 09:51 AMOK, so twice in my life I've adopted strays straight from the street who have turned out to be pregnant. With those experiences behind me I can't in good conscience advocate taking them all (though I'm having to really rein myself in). However, taking just TWO, just those cute, non-fluffy, orange and black ones, well that is a horse of 2 different colors! Both. Definitely both. Among other things they will both be high energy and they will play with each other which will hopefully keep your existing darling from the indignity of regular torment.
So, see? It's only right and practical to take both.
Posted by: Kizz at September 28, 2007 10:34 AMOh, I would take the ginger. I have an orange cat thing.
I can also speak from experience that montrously huge cats are awesome.
Lucky lucky lucky Leah!
Posted by: Ky Eliza at September 28, 2007 01:25 PMThat is cuteness of epic proportions.
Posted by: Chris Cactus at September 29, 2007 06:45 PMI say go for the orange one. If you research it, the books say it is best to go with a kitten of the opposite sex of the cat you have. We did that and despite the fact that our boy cat is bigger, he is definitely not the boss of our house. He is completely submissive to the cat we had when we got him.
