Small Cup, Half Full

sake.jpg

On any given weekend, it seems like we're either packing or unpacking luggage, driving off to the outskirts of the wilderness or the heart of the city (although wouldn't the outskirts of the wilderness be the city?), or attending some kind of party, whether with 100,000 people staggering drunkenly across San Francisco in costume or putting on silly hats and hosting cocktail hour for two at home. Come holidays like New Year's or St. Patrick's or the Fourth of July, though--days when we're supposed to leave the house and get 'er done with friends and neighbors and silly hats--we usually find ourselves sitting home, faces pressed against the bay window in hopes the postlady will bring us a new Netflix because if not, what then? It wasn't until everyone was leaving the office last Friday and wishing each other fun-filled Memorial Days that I realized Simon and I would be spending yet another holiday pressed against the bay window watching for the mail truck. (We're waiting for the second disc of Angels in America and our patience is paper thin; the film is amazing.) Simon sort of vaguely wished people would show up for a traditional barbecue, but it didn't work out in the end, and thus it was that our Monday was mundane. Simon went to a holiday sale and brought back a vibraslap for me (not dirty--see?), along with some sort of distortion pedal, and a cheap guitar to cover with rhinestones. (Not kidding. The word "bedazzle" was used.) While he was away, I Turbo Sculpted and Crunchless Abbed and then together we went out to find some rhinestones (fail!), tennis shoes (score!), and groceries. We came home and cooked swordfish for dinner (wtf?) and then watched Girls Next Door and a Star Wars special on the History Channel. It could have been any day. Blah. But at least we got out of the house before evening fell as opposed to Saturday, which we spent in bathrobes, surfing the net, reading, and taking pictures around the house until leaving for the gym (wtf?) at 6 p.m. Not good blog fodder, this lazy weekend, although probably necessary for our sanity.

But all is not lost. On Sunday we met some friends at the Takara Sake Factory in Berkeley for a free tasting and a quick lunch on Fourth Street. I feel like I should have more to say about it, but I really don't. It was cool, we learned some stuff, we drank some stuff, we bought some stuff, we ate some stuff. Good times.

Wow. This is seriously boring.

Here are three things that I'm pretty jazzed about:

1. Simon fixed the busted closet rod via multiple power tools and scrap wood, and for my part, I agreed to reliquish to the charity gods about a dozen pieces of clothing from my overstuffed stock. Among the sacrifices are several shirts I distinctly remember purchasing with my mom at Sears in junior high.

2. We booked our flights and hotel rooms for Chicago in July. Yes, WE. Simon is coming after all and has graciously agreed to make a special cameo appearance at the two BlogHer cocktail parties, but only on the condition that he be kept adequately awash in the adoration of sexy blogging women. Let's make it happen! The even better news is that we called the W (where the cool kids are staying) and booked a room there with no problem, which means HeatherB will not have to wander the streets of Chicago in her p.j.s calling my name in the middle of the night. And there's even better news than that! Southwest is offering cheapo flights during July, so each one-way ticket is only costing us an astounding, logic-defying $70! Book before this Friday and you can come too!

3. I rejuvenated what little enthusiasm I have for breakfast during breakfasttime by purchasing a box of Cream o' Wheat. Man, I love that stuff. And so does the cat!

$70. Holy cow.

I once got a roundtrip ticket on Southwest during CHRISTMAS for $119 (prior to tax) from Las Vegas to MA. Now, granted, I live in Los Angeles but I drive an Econobox and Vegas has completely free airport parking so even adding in gas and the hassle of the 3 hour drive, it was so totally worth it.

mine is $770, so, close. Since Simon is coming too, can I touch his hair while or after touching yours?

I am excited to see you both.

You make stroke his pelt for a small fee. I'll give you a discount because you're Canadian.

Oh....I love Cream of Wheat too....with honey and a little milk. It's my comfort food. I'm impressed with your closet cleaning. I have pulled out various items which do not fit, are not low rise, have a stain, or are ancient - tried them on - and proceeded to stuff them back in. I should get on that. ;)

I so wanted to wander on up to SF this past weekend, but John's been traveling a lot for business lately and he had a long date planned with our couch.

We will come eventually! Here's to relaxing weekends.

You know what this means? I get to show up at your room in my PJ's!!!!!

I wish you could see the smile on my face right now. Wheee. And dude, Southwest and I are becoming BFF. I've practically got a free flight. Tis awesome and I am a happy little girl right now.

I shall have a filet o' fish to celebrate. ;-)

You forgot to mention your Saturday trip to the grocery store. I know this because I had my very first Leah and Simon sighting while at our local grocery store! I felt a little starstruck, and talked myself out of coming up to say hi. Then had to admit to my girlfriend what a dork I was for being all nervous about saying hi to someone who writes a blog. She didn't even know what a blog was, so after having to explain that, I felt like even more of a dork. Oh well, you and Simon are even more fabulous in real life! The snazzy gym clothes and post workout glow helped, too!

Busted! We did go to the grocery store after hitting the gym on Saturday. And although I usually wear LONG pants to the gym, they were all dirty so I had to wear shorts. Tiny shorts! With spandex shorts underneath! I also usually wear a hat to cover up the greasy, sweated-upon hair, but I didn't have it with me! So I was basically a greasy, sweated-upon, spandexed, all-out grody mess. I can't imagine why you didn't want to say hello! ;)

Although you totally should have.

Oh, I wish I could join you in Chicago, but you don't know me, and although I'm a hoot, I swear it -- especially over cocktails -- I always find it best to be invited on out-of-town trips. That one time I wasn't it got really awkward, really fast.

Posted by: Jennie at May 30, 2007 02:11 PM

But you ARE invited. Everyone's invited! Come! Enjoy! Wear spandex!

You guys need to have kids.
That'll put an end to all that lazy weekend in bathrobes go to the gym watch the History channel stuff in a heartbeat.
I haven't had a weekend like that in 12 years and after all, why should you guys be all relaxed and happy when I can't be?
