Stu-stu-studio
That sneaky minx Mrs. Flinger nominated me in the Blogger's Choice Awards for "Best Photography Blog" (ha!) and "Best Blog of All Time" (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ow). Mrs. Flinger is sweet, but I suspect she is also on the smack.
Since this is the first time I've been nominated for one of these interweb dealy-doos, I might as well cordially invite you all to choo-choo-choose me, even though PSHAW! AS IF! Consider your vote for me a rebellion against the confines of rationality and/or a mighty scoff in the face of existentialist despair. I should make that my official motto--AGirlandaBoy.com: Making Life Worth Living. Clicky-click below to vote. (You have to register. Bleh.)
Now that I have a rep to protect, I thought I'd better flex some of the muscles that got me here in the first place, so last night I spent some quality time in the studio like a true professional. I handpicked a pristine sample of produce from my backyard organic garden and then gingerly carried it on a pillow sewn with gold thread into the studio loft where I keep my many thousands of dollars worth of sophisticated photography equipment. I took a few straightforward portraits...

...and a few ambiant, pouty boudoir shots. Work it, girls!

Of course, this is all a huge lie. The tomatoes came from Trader Joe's, oddly packaged in a plastic bag, and the "studio" was set up in the bedroom. On the bed, to be exact.

(Those are our "manly" sheets, selected to keep me company while Simon's away because they're flannel (warm, like him) and plaid (lumberjack chic, like him). He also happened to be wearing cologne the one night he slept on them before he left, so now they even smell like him. I will not deny that I have turned his pillow longwise and humped on it a bit.)
The do-it-yourself lightbox design came from Strobist, and it was so easy it seriously took me about half and hour to put together. Well, half an hour and nine months, since I started gathering the materials last summer, having only recently found the perfect box--a champagne case.
I only used a couple of still-life subjects this time around because the process was so easy and so satisfying that I knew if I let myself get too involved, I'd be up all night posing every trinket and tchotchke and bottle of fingernail polish in the house, and that's no way to win "Best Blog of All Time," posting shots of nail polish, now, is it?
But perhaps a catalog spread of Crate and Barrell nesting bowls will do the trick? Anyone?

Lovely. You make those tomatoes look SO GOOD! I love tomatoes, in general, by the way.

Posted by: iamnot at April 26, 2007 12:10 PMwow, your catalog spread of crate and barrel is sexy. what did you say to the bowls to get them comfortable enough to do that?
Posted by: jeorg at April 26, 2007 02:16 PMI filled them with liquor.
Posted by: Leah at April 26, 2007 02:26 PMI just rocked the vote :)
Posted by: Angella at April 26, 2007 03:27 PMI am so going to have to try that. I wonder if I can get Stanley in a box that size...
Posted by: reddirtroad at April 26, 2007 06:55 PMliquored up tomatoes... dirty!
Posted by: jeorg at April 26, 2007 07:11 PMI can't believe you haven't been nominated for a million things. I mean, seriously, I think you're being modest. Or lying. Or both. ;-)
Drunk tomatoes. Awesome. (Also, thanks for the light-box tip.. running, I mean waddling, to make my own and take not-nearly-as-great photos of tiny toys!)
Posted by: Mrs. Flinger at April 26, 2007 07:34 PMDude. The studio. I want one! You can photograph your nail polishes, and I'll do my lip glosses.
Let's collaborate.
Posted by: chirky at April 26, 2007 10:13 PMI've been looking for a good way to capture things in a white atmosphere. That's an awesome idea! I'm totally stealing it.
Posted by: Chris at April 27, 2007 05:28 AMChris--I can't wait to see what you come up with! (And I can't wait to get some black posterboard for a background too...)
Posted by: Leah at April 27, 2007 09:59 AMLove the pics of the tomatoes. I have the exact same lamp and have used it for lighting photos!
Posted by: stacy kathryn at April 27, 2007 11:31 AMThere's an identical lamp on the other side of the box too, but the there's a big black blog of cat blocking it.
Posted by: Leah at April 27, 2007 11:37 AMThis is a photo blog? I thought it was about making hammocks out of cat hair. :-)
I might have to build my own "studio" now. That is awesome. The maters are making my salad-vate.
Posted by: Texas T-bone at April 27, 2007 11:55 AMoh my I love it when you talk photography! Remember that house discussion we were all having a while back - the house we are buying has the perfect crafty/studio/photographers den/space for wall to wall bookshelves! I am going to make a box studio out of our moving boxes.
Is there a flickr group for macro shots made in a box? There should be! Think of all the interesting things you could shoot?!?!?
Posted by: The Real Mrs White at April 27, 2007 08:48 PMGod damn stop it already. Chris and I are on our way over....kind of. Not.
Posted by: a girl you know at April 28, 2007 05:31 AMYou said - Consider your vote for me a rebellion against the confines of rationality and/or a mighty scoff in the face of existentialist despair.
Kind of like Sanjaya?
(laughing)
Off I go, forthwith, to cast my vote.
