Dirty Dishwater
I been workin' for meals like a junkyard dog today and likely won't have time to blog at home because, just as my life used to be punctuated by theme evenings like Sushi Night and Whiskey Night, Simon and I have today designated this evening Dish Night because for the last week we have been completely without clean dishes, which is a tragedy second only to what follows, which is that all flat surfaces are stacked high with sticky plates and moldy bowls and bits and pieces of things that may be either leftover food or insects that were poisoned by ingesting said leftover food. We are living in squalor and I'm officially putting an end to it tonight. This morning I needed a utensil with which to stir my milked and sugared tea, and I ended up resorting to shimmying out with Jenga-like precision a relatively disease-free-looking fork from the pile on the kitchen table. I ran it under the tap for about three seconds, wiped it off with a dishtowel, and then kissed it up to god before dunking it in my beverage, which, now that I think about, was definitely not hot enough to kill any lurking bacteria.
What I've learned this week: (1) How quickly things can fall apart and (2) How quickly they can be put back together. We're starting with dishes and seeing where that gets us.

Good luck with that!! I hate cleaning!!
dishes suck. clean dishes rule.
I did dishes tonight because of the same predicament. I'm glad I'm not the only one who lets the dishes get away. Living in squalor is so easy to do!
Hulk cleaned out the refigerator today for the first time since at least November, since that's the date on the oldest yogurt he found.
Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to spending part of this upcoming weekend cleaning and organizing because I really can't handle the mess and clutter and winter dirt anymore. Ugh.
The best way to make sure you clean your dishes is to put only two sets in your kitchen. But then you'd just start using paper towels. And then somebody would have to take out the garbage more often.
Instead, maybe you can just duct-tape the dishes to Simon's vehicle and run it through the car wash.
See, now, this is exactly why I have dogs and small children.
Our dishes are always clean, sorta.
Happy Valentine's Day, Leah and Simon.
You could start keeping your dirty dishes in the bathroom. Then you could whittle away at the pile during your showers.
hey, so i dunno if you're the type of photographer who likes going to things that might make for an interesting photo but fyi, tomorrow (i.e. wednesday, february 14th) there's gonna be another pillow fight club. . . looks like it's at market and embarcadero at 6pm. . . i think there's a website for it at pillowfightclub.org or something but i'm not sure. . .
Tina--I think you said the dishes-in-the-shower thing in jest, but you know, that's actually something I'd consider doing. I'm all about multitasking.
I'm a big old lazy procrastinator too (and also get a little preoccupied with being out of the house due to work), but I've got to say that I can't let the house get too dirty or else my mood goes south. And, with 2 big dogs, 2 cats and the kid, the house needs vacuuming at least once a week. I let it go for 2 weeks recently and couldn't bear the dirt under the feet.
Is everything ok? You mentioned things falling apart? I hope there's nothing serious other than dirty dishes.
We have a snow day today... wheee!
Things are okay. Housework is just subject to inertia. We're lucky if we vacuum once a month.
If I were rich, I'd buy you a dishwasher. I couldn't live without mine. I think both the car wash and shower ideas are a great temporary fix :)
Oh, I do that all the time. But I just put them from the sink to the dishwasher and leave it there until we run out of dishes and then run the dishwasher and then use the dishes directly from there because I'm too damn lazy to actually put them away.
At least you already have someone and he is well aware that you do this. I am going to have to tell someone that I don't mind having dirty dishes for a week and he will run the hell away.
One week? I wish it were only one week. We have so many dishes that we get into the same position we do with laundry--if we were to wait until we absolutely HAVE to wash, we could go months (even with half our dishes and a good portion of our clothes in storage).
As god as my witness, my next place will have a dishwasher and I'll never go dirty again!*
*Twenty gold stars to whoever knows this reference.
to Heather B....or you could be like me. Use straight from the dishwasher and when the sink piles high again...reload and wash again - there'd be no need for cabinets!
Saturday mornings when the first pot of coffee and brewing is when I manage to clean out the sink and the counters - the refrigerator? Not so much.....
Cheers!
Modern day Scarlett O'Hara, much?
I used to put off doing dishes until it absolutely couldn't be avoided but then I'd actually find it pretty therapeutic. I'd put on some music, drink some wine, and just relax. But now HTB always does the dishes, which works great too!
Yay! Felicity wins!
