Summer Dreams

As if hearing it ten times a day and then reading it on my blog weren't bad enough, this morning I explained to Simon, once again, in excruciating, timelined, finger-counting detail, that I have not been warm and conscious at the same time for an entire week. The space heater we bought is just that--a heater of a half-circle space that extends exactly three feet directly in front of the dish, which has no blower. The label reads "It directs heat where you want it--at you! So you don't have to warm the whole room!" That should have been my first clue that if I wanted to feel my fingers at all this winter I'd have to find out how to live a fulfilling life within that three-foot half-circle on the floor. If I could just figure out how to attach myself to a spit, then I could also enjoy a warm back 50 percent of the time and maybe wouldn't mind so much if I never breathed fresh air again.
At work we had heat for about three hours on Monday, but since then, nothing. The wind is blowing a frillion freezing miles an hour outside our leaky windows, and I keep looking around for the rest of the witch because I am clearly sitting high atop her icy tit.
"I haven't been warm in a week," I tell Simon.
"I know."
"Between home and work and the ferry ride and Alcatraz and the streets of San Francisco and standing outside at the train station and the AIR CONDITIONING on the traincars, I think the world is coming to an end."
"I know."
"We're all going to die."
"Yes. Of course."
"The only time I'm warm is when I'm in bed under the electric blanket, and most of that time I'm unconscious."
"So what you're saying is that the only time you're happy is when you're in bed with me?"
"I'm saying that the only time I'm happy is when I'm unconscious."
At least that's what I would have said if I wanted to be funny. But this is no laughing matter, so my response was that yes, I am happiest in bed with him (what's new?), and if it were up to me, I would stay there until spring, or maybe longer if we could arrange bedside pizza delivery.
But tomorrow we are flying to Mexico. Tomorrow it will be 89 degrees (32 Celsius, Canadian dears). Tomorrow I will hop off a plane, kiss the warm Puerto Vallartan tarmack, and take off all my clothes right there to reveal the swimsuit (and blinding white flesh) underneath. For the next five days, I will not wear socks. For the next five days, I will not consider putting an ad online offering "Will Clean Toilets with Perosonal Toothbrush for Heat." For the next five days, I will not make Simon want to put tape over my mouth and shove me in a closet. For the next five days I will not wallow in dissatisfaction over an inaccessible future in which there is heat in every room, a dishwasher in the kitchen, a washer and dryer in the finished basement, and a baby in the nursery sleeping peacefully while I eat bonbons and surf the web for Christmas gifts for the gardener and the cleaning lady and the personal trainer. For the next five days, I will focus on being present, and in the presence of friends, fruity cocktails, and the blazing yellow tropical sun.
I just got off the phone with Simon, and we've decided that for the next five days I might have to change my name to Zachary, you know, to go with all the daiquiries. (I will not spell it Zaiquiri, though.) I have to say that's a much better option than Bricicle the Human Icicle or, say, Hypothermia.

[Photos are of the "sand ladder" Simon scaled in the last leg (pun intended) of this triathlon. He is my hero.]
Bon voyage, Zack. Enjoy everyminute of that sunshine and take lots of pictures.
Posted by: Amanda at November 29, 2006 10:40 AMEnjoy the sun!
My family has informed me of the cold that has hit the Bay Area. I think we really lucked out for our trip last week in terms of weather. Here it is 15F and snowing, but at least people here believe in heaters.
Posted by: Emily at November 29, 2006 10:47 AMHave a fabulous time on vacay. And I am deeply sympathetic to your constantly cold situation. I am so sorry. Being cold blows.
One of the worst stretches of time in my life was a week-long trip to London, when I stayed in someone's flat in the middle of winter. And they had no heat. Seriously. NONE. And -- and! -- there was no shower, of course, only a bathtub, so you had to sit there in the frigid cold of the bathroom with half your body immersed in warm water and the other half shivering and covered in goose bumps. Not fun.
Be warm and may the only codl you encounter be those delicious daquiris!
Posted by: Lawyerish at November 29, 2006 01:16 PMHave fun! Drink a Dachary or 50 for me :)
Posted by: Angella at November 29, 2006 01:16 PMI wish I could bottle some of the insanely hot Aussie summer we're experiencing (before Summer starts even! grrr) and send it to you to release into your living room for when you need it most :) Have a fantastic holiday!
Posted by: Tan at November 29, 2006 01:48 PMOh, have a great time! I know you will!
Posted by: reddirtroad at November 30, 2006 12:18 AMGosh, I thought California was hot! And it's really mild here in Northern England. My world view has been turned upside down.
ps Good post, enjoyed it.
Posted by: Bokker at November 30, 2006 02:20 AMBeing cold sucks! And when you finally get indoors to some heat it takes hours to get the cold out of your bones.
Have fun in Mexico!
Have a great time with all the daiquiries and the sun!
Also - beautiful photo!
Posted by: Colleen at November 30, 2006 05:45 AMAwesome, have a wonderful time! Love the photos, they make me want to be on the beach in the worst way.
Posted by: felicity at November 30, 2006 07:57 AMI used to have a "convection heater" that didn't have a blower, either, but it actually worked. Was low, long and quiet and about $20 bucks at Wal-Mart.
It's cold here, about 30 degrees and on the verge of snow. That's not so bad, I know, but yesterday's high was 80. The quick change actually produced something I'd never heard of: thundersleet.
Have an awesome, awesome trip. You deserve it.
Posted by: Texas T-bone at November 30, 2006 09:52 AMWow... I hope you have/are having/had a absolutely fabulous vacation.
I am sitting at my desk with my winter coat on because the furnance decided to head to Mexico too. It's 10 degrees outside and I am dreaming of Mexico now!
Can't wait to see some pictures of your vacation!
Posted by: and rudeness at November 30, 2006 10:54 AMI am so incredibly jealous right now. Have a great time!
Posted by: lainey at November 30, 2006 02:19 PMthere's allways a reason: the constantly cold situation in your home will make enjoy the most, a warm vacation...
your written attitude has been an inspiration for weeks for me...
Go enjoy! Think of us who are here, all pasty white, in the snow... then drink one for me.
Posted by: Mrs. Flinger at December 1, 2006 08:59 AMThere is a plastic coating you can get which goes over the windows (attached all around to the frame) and stays there all winter. It can be blurry if it isn't applied taught enough, and you can't open the windows, but it might significantly cut down on your drafty windows. Good luck. I hate being cold and I live in Canada, eh?
