Basking

It's finally sunny here again, and to celebrate the spring rays, I spent yesterday evening on the porch with my favorite boy and cat. One was wearing tiny running shorts and siphoning the neighbor's wireless connection, and the other was ignoring my strict orders to stop eating leaves and gnawing on everything oh my god stop with the chewing already that's a metal garden stake what is wrong with you cat?

I'm more than ready for the warm, dry weather. Not only does it mean new shorts and flipflops and afternoons in the hammock, but it means no more having to wear a coat and mittens in the house. Yes, I'm still complaining about how cold Simon's place is, and were it not for my memories of last September--when it was warm enough that my fingers didn't cramp and then go numb after playing the piano for five minutes, and when it was warm enough to wear a tiny tiny skirt during private cocktail hour in the lounge with my pervy boyfriend--I would have nothing nothing worth living for. Except babies, because, you know, I'M INSANE. (But seriously, what's up with people squeezing out kids every time I turn on the television? I'm looking at you Katie Holms and Brooke Shields, but also Sydney Bristow and Miranda Hobbes, from shows I don't even watch.)

Other things to look forward to in the much nearer future include:

--my birthday! May 1! so old!
--another trip to SoCal in a few weeks to have Simon's eyes burned by lasers
--my mother convincing my dad and brother to visit the Bay Area for Bay to Breakers, America's greatest parade of freaks and naked people (and naked freaks)
--a trip to Salt Lake in July to celebrate my proud pioneer heritage by eating Kentucky Fried Chicken and not talking about the family's polygamist roots
--Simon's first triathlon!
--a skip across the pond for Mel and Kilo's wedding and my pilgrimage to Stratford upon Avon, where I shall sigh for the soul of my first true love, William Shakespeare
--the inevitable early-fall heat wave, which means beach days and frozen lemonades on the Santa Cruz boardwalk

In the meantime, I'm going to start getting serious about some kind of schedule that will allow us to both (a) work out regularly and (b) have a life. Whereas Simon's job allows him to go swimming or biking during the day, the only time I can get to the gym is after work, but that means the rest of the evening is pretty much shot to hell for anything besides watching a movie. I think the trick is to cut out this whole "eating" thing. Dinner is just plain inconvenient, and if I do away with it altogether, just think of the time and money I'll save!

Here's your assignment today: Tell me 1. what you're looking forward to this summer and/or (b) how do you go to the gym regularly without it taking over your life and/or 3. what we should talk about on our next webcast and/or 4. are people still wearing hats to English weddings or will I look like a doof if I show up in this? Thanks for playing!

But honey... I like leaves. They are tasty. Jeez, lay off already.

How exactly do you get the cat to keep those shorts on and why does he need a wireless connection?

Summer--I look forward to not getting the kids ready for school in the morning and the extra 30 minutes that frees in my day.

I would only have time to work out if I gave up lunch and did 30 minutes at the gym near work. I'm considering it.

1. Looking forward this summer: to sitting in the backyard by the firepit and alleviating some paleness of my pasty legs.
2.Gym regularly - can you run? I find it a lot less time consuming.
3. Next webcast - Why your Dad thinks Simon's gay? What, exactly, is wrong with Canadians?
4. I've never been to an English wedding but I can't imagine you'd look like a doofus in anything.

Posted by: Kristin at April 21, 2006 11:09 AM

Go for the hat - people do indeed still wear them at english weddings although they're probably not the hat-fests they once were.

Posted by: lottie at April 21, 2006 12:03 PM

1. Cookouts, chilled roses and sparkling red wines, drives along the PCH.

2. I do the gym in the mornings. I get there by 5AM two mornings a week and at 6AM two other mornings. I also hike on the weekends. I absolutely cannot workout after work. Just too exhausted.

3. Uh, dunno.

4. That hat is awesome!

Posted by: Gimmy at April 21, 2006 12:05 PM

1. Playing in the dirt in our new backyard and eating home grown (not in a window box) tomatoes. Oh, and camping, and hiking, and showing off my svelte self at my 10th HS reunion in August.

2. I go every day after work, but my gym is a block away from work and 5 blocks away from home. So it really takes no time to get there and little time to walk home. If I can't go after work because of Plans, I go during my lunch hour. And I run with the Hulk or go for long walks on the weekends.

3. Hmmm. You could talk about the plight of the whooping crane, I suppose.

4. I have no idea. I'm sure you'd look fabulous in a hat, though.

Posted by: Emily at April 21, 2006 12:25 PM

1. fresh salad greens/sungold tomatoes grown by me, cookouts with lots of friends/cold beer/grilled pizza, warm sun
2. I walk or run after work near my house, plus I have a weight bench and a really good pilates DVD when I'm feeling more quick/lazy
3. no clue
4. hats are not my thing, so i will not advise on this... :)

Summer? You need to experience an Okanagan summer to believe it! The heat, the lake the fresh FRUIT...Oh, man!
I had laser eye surgery last June. Best money I ever spent. Well, except for my wedding :)

Posted by: Angella at April 21, 2006 01:00 PM

1. Meeting our baby girl and sitting on the deck with her in the sunshine (under an umbrella, of course). Also, lots of ice cream and days at the beach.
2. I've never been a really loyal gym goer, but going for nice, long strolls with a friend has always been my favourite way to burn calories.
3. Seriously, I want to hear the story of you and Simon met. Please, can't you devote at least a minute of your next webcast to telling the tale?
4. No clue about the hats. If you do decide to go with a hat, just don't have any of those furry, feathery things dangling off of it, like the royals so frequently model.

Bon weekend, Leah!

1.) going to europe for two months (getting to putz about for one month and work for the other)
b.) i go for 30 minutes and then leave. daily is best.
3.) your first kiss ever, yall's first kiss and the best pizza in the bay area.
4.) yes and i like the hat.

for the record, my numbering matches your numbering/lettering in the post.

Things I look forward to in summer:
-light out until 9-10pm
-driving with the window down
-being tan
-flipflops, tanktops, and sunglasses
-camping
-hiking
-going to the beach/pool/lake
-wearing your bikini under all clothing even if you have no intention of going to beach/pool/lake
-not needing a sweatshirt at night
-bbq's
-fireworks
-road trips
-painted toenails
-coming inside to an air-conditioned room after being out in the heat
-no make-up necessary except lipgloss
-vodka lemonades and frozen margs on a rooftop bar
-that certain "something" in the air during summer nights that always makes you want to do something that you wouldn't normally do

I'm sure I could go on but I think this is long enough and in case its not obvious, I LOVE summertime. :)

Posted by: monica at April 21, 2006 01:26 PM

Damn, Monica, that's a good list.

Posted by: Leah at April 21, 2006 01:31 PM

That IS a great list, Monica...it gave me some serious warm fuzzies!

I'm looking forward to all of her stuff plus-

-gardening
-Telluride Bluegrass Festival!
-smell of cut grass and coconut (ok, sunblock)
-concerts at Red Rocks (Ween!)
-cold beer in those cozy-things or out of a keg in a plastic cup
-backpacking in the mtns.
-symphony picnics in the park on a weeknight
-bike riding out to bars
-not watching TV
-the farmer's market and fresh produce
-reggae music
-fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato salad
-sangria
-porch sitting

I try to mix it up with the workouts...now that it's warm and light out AND I have a dog, that dictates...you got it: that I run after work a lot. I also have a yoga class once a week and a step class once a week and in between all that I go to the gym on campus over lunch sometimes to lift weights or do the elliptical. The best thing is to treat it like work and take the weekends OFF...although, I'm still active anyway on the weekends, there's just no pressure.

Speaking of running, that's what I've got to do now! Bye!

my summer happenings...

definitely...
* moving from berkeley to the city
* going to egypt and morocco

hopefully...
* meeting a woman as well suited for me as leah is for simon

that sounds like just about enough for one season

1) We are coming into chilly hands and feet mornings and frozen icicle noses (ie winter), not summer. Bah you northern hemishpere sooner-summer-getters :P

2) The gym and I have become unaquainted since my knees have been playing up, so if you get there once a month, you're doing better than me right now.

3) Tell us about you guys in high school, what kind of kids were you?

4) Who cares if no one else is wearing one, that hat says I rock. I reckon its a winner. Wear it, take photos. There must be photos.

Posted by: just a girl at April 22, 2006 04:52 AM

1. This summer I'm looking forward to:
- picnics in the Vondelpark on hot sunny afternoons that end up going on until 2am
- bike rides down the river with a picnic lunch packed in my basket
- many many lost afternoons on canalside pub terraces
- slumming it as a student for a week and a half around France and Belgium with two of my sisters

2. The gym thing - I have to go straight after work or I'll get swallowed up by my sofa. I find a good workout wakes me up if I'm feeling sluggish after a long day in front of my computer, and is also a pretty effective way of de-stressing (pretend the treadmill is your boss's/that annoying colleague's head). Plus, I still get my daily fix of Dutch MTV from the big screens in the cardio area.

3. Talk about birthday plans! Mine is May 7th, I'm already getting excited (but also a little scared).

4. You *must* wear the hat. It's fabulous and very very English summer wedding.

Posted by: Catherine at April 22, 2006 08:25 AM

Looking forward to my wedding in May (five days after your birthday - I'll pretend ONE piece is birthday cake) because I finally get to focus on BEING married instead of GETTING married. :)

Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to include working out in my schedule. I'm hoping to become a regular walker in my new neighborhood with lots of HILLS.

Posted by: jennie at April 22, 2006 04:25 PM

This summer I'm looking forward to pictures of you in a hat at that wedding.
Um, also, traveling a lot around Egypt as I prepare to say goodbye to it. (Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease)

Also, you should watch the Wedding Date for further details on English wedding rituals.
