My Mechanical Eye
This morning I walked by a comic book store and glanced in at the window display as I passed. There on a shelf one cat was swatting playfully at her brother from behind Spiderman's splayed legs.

I didn't break stride, kept on walking, but it wasn't four steps later that a huge smile spread across my face. The guy walking in front of me evidently had the same idea because when he U-turned he was wearing the same goofy grin. I saw him open his backpack and pull out a digital camera. I U-turned and pulled out mine.

We each took a few shots, looking all young and hip with our equipment and our iPods and our thirft-store clothes. The people who passed, well, they noticed us first, I'm sure, but they eventually saw the kittens too; I caught their reflections in the window.

Just look what happens when you carry a camera. In a way, I am helping people see.
