1000 Words and Then Some, Pt. 2

Pictures so good (if I may say so myself) that I want to lick them.

Salt Lake was mostly overcast and gloomy and beautiful during our visit there last weekend.

Q: How many times did I squeal "Ooh! Look at the clouds!"?
A: About a million.

We stayed in all day Friday so my parents could poke and prod Simon and see how he looked ankle-chained to various pieces of furniture, but on Saturday we managed to get out of the house and go for a drive. Rain in the valley meant snow in the mountains, so we drove up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Silver Lake and stomped around in our inappropriate shoes and jackets. Many many many many pictures were taken, and my dad dropped snow down the back of my pants as proof that when I crouch to get a shot, I sport a distinctive "photographer's crack."

Loveliness abounds.

After hearing my parents complain about the Mormons for two days straight, Simon eventualy asked them why they stayed in Utah if the people were so intolerable. "The seasons," said Dad. "And everything is so close." By "everything" he meant the mountains, the desert, the red rock, the lakes, skiing, hiking, boating, hanggliding--everything's just a short drive away. On Sunday we experienced it firsthand as we headed west out of the valley and into the desert.

Two hours into the drive Simon got his first glimpse at what has to be one of the strangest natural features anywhere: the salt flats. I don't know why people don't make a bigger deal of them than they do, because I find them utterly bizarre. I mean miles and miles of salt? WTF? I kinda wanted to gather some and take it home and put it in jar, but I kinda also didn't want my fingers to taste like salt for the next twelve hours.

We stopped at my favorite rest stop in the entire world, and Simon gathered rocks in his shirt front to spell out our initials. Seriously, seriously beautiful, folks.

We spent the rest of Sunday driving across Nevada ("a" like in "hat," not like in "hot," please) to make it home in time for Halloween. Still, we lollygagged a bit, playing slots at a gas station in Reno, stopping on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway to throw open the doors and boogie in the street, digitally preserving our goofiness for posterity.

In conclusion: snow, salt, sagebrush, silly. Discuss.

Yeah, the salt flats pictures were taken about 5 miles out of Wendover.
