I'm It

As I was sitting here thinking of what to write that won't require dealing with eight hundred thousand digital photos, I remembered that I was tagged by CG over at Karmic Irony to participate in the music meme that's going around. More narcissism! Hooray! Here you go:

The total volume of music files on my computer:
My 30 GB laptop has about 16 GB of music, and my external hard drive has somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 GB of mp3s. Every day I carry 55 GB (almost 13,000 songs) in my hip pocket. Kind of makes you want to throw up, huh?

The last CD I bought:
I bought Jellyfish's Spilt Milk and From Bubblegum to Sky's Me and Amy and the Two French Boys for someone special (hi, you!). The last time I bought something for myself? Well, I don't buy often, but when I do, I go nuts. A recent splurge scored me Pogues, Mountain Goats, Ramones, Ani, Replacements, and Prokoviev. But I get most of my music from generous friends and 3hive; I am the music industry's worst nightmare.

Song playing right now:
Nothing because I'm watching tv, but let's see what I was last listening to on my iPod...Ah, Mates of State, "Proof." Not bad.

Five songs I listen to a lot or mean a lot to me, in no particular order:
Okay, there are too many songs that "mean a lot to me, in no particular order," so let's just go with my list of "This is a song I'm obsessed with right now..." Warning: I am not playing by the rules.

Iggy Pop's "The Passenger"
Billy Bragg and Wilco doing "Against th' Law"
Brendan Benson's "Alternative to Love"
Charlie Terrell's "Let's Go for a Ride"
Nick Cave's "The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane"
Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man"
Jack and Faye's "An Inscription at Salona"
Eric Clapton's acoustic version of "Layla"
Cadillac Kings "Bombshell Blonde"
Clem Snide's "Fill Me With Your Light"
David Gray's "Shine"
The Decemberists' "We Both Go Down Together"
Eels "Old Shit/New Shit" and "Sound of Fear" and "Going Fetal" and "Packing Blankets" and, and, and...
ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky"
English Beat's "End of the Party"
Green Day's "Church on Sunday"
The Real Kids' "Rave On"
The Sadies' "Loved On Look"
Jethro Tull's "Wond'ring Aloud" and "Up to Me" and "Thick as a Brick" (the whole damn thing)
Mike Doughty's "You Were the Only Answer"
Johnny Cash's cover of U2's "One"
The Sonics' "Have Love Will Travel"
The Black Keys' "Have Love Will Travel"
Big Sandy's "Have Love Will Travel"
Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter's Blues"
Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
Modern English's "I Melt with You"
The Mountain Goats' "Riches and Wonders" and "The Recognition Scene" and "No Children" and "02-75" and oh, just everything
Old 97s' "King of All the World"
Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man"
Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels"
Nick Drake's "Which Will"
The Pogues' "If I Should Fall from Grace with God"
Robyn Hitchcock's "Elizabeth Jade"
The Shins' "Fighting in a Sack"
T. Rex's "Mambo Sun"
Banyan's "La Sirena"
The White Stripes' "Hotel Yorba"
Traffic's "Light Up or Leave Me Alone"
The Velvet Underground: everything Will's sent me, plus probably all the stuff I haven't listened to yet
Honorable mention goes to Rilo Kiley's "Frug," which I heard tonight for the first (and second and third and fourth and fifth and sixth) time. "I cannot do the Smurf." Heh.
Another honorable mention goes to Jude's "Baby Ruth in Atlanta," which, according to iTunes, I listened to a grand total of 146 times in just three months. (Let's just say I had a bad few weekends...) I haven't touched it since March, but 146 is a lot of play, especially considering my next most-abused track has been played only 40 times. Yeesh.

And that's it. There are no more. I have been completely complete and comprehensibly reprehensible.

Is that the last question? What? We were doing questions? Meme? Huh? Excuse me while I go hammer my skull where it covers the part in my brain that is sure you all think that list was constructed to show off my eclectic taste blah blah obnoxious poseur blah blah I probably just bought an overpriced snarky T-shirt at Urban Outfitters blah blah blah please don't hate me, I'm not as self-obsessed as I sound blah blah blah.

Who else wants to show off? I tag Kristin, Shirley, SLP, Feisty, and, finally, Jeannie (answer in the comments, you blogless biyotch) (p.s. I love you!).

...

Now it's audience participation time. Everyone who answers the following survey question gets their name thrown into my most favoritest Giants cap, and the person whose monniker is plucked out by my hot little hand will (if he or she is willing to send me his or her address) receive a mix CD made by yours truly, most likely featuring many of the songs listed above, but maybe something completely different, like Moody Blues and Britney Spears and highlights from The Music Man and reggae Christmas carols. Guilty as charged.

Your survey question is:

Would you like to see agirlandaboy.com include a sidebar feature that shows what music I listened to on my walk to work each day? No annoying lists, just a now-you-see-it-now-you-don't daily blip. I promise not to pick things that just sound cool blah blah blah.

I will accept answers in the comments until the end of the week or until I get sick of this game. It's my party and I'll be fickle and change the rules if I want to. Now go forth and do my bidding!

Oh baby, I got tagged! Score! Alright, so there's no problem with the showing off (is there ever?)...but I'm without my CDs at home-home here! I hate how most everything I own is at school-home, but I'll get working on that.

And as for the survey thingie: Sure! Why not? I think we'd like to know more about Leah than we already do. In the hat I go!

I'd like to see the list. You have very different taste in music than I do and I'm looking to diversify my iPod. So I'm open to any tips you have to offer on good music.

oh egads i got tagged (btw, thanks for making me a dot com, even though i'm a humble blogpotter still! )! i'll post mine this week on my page. i was hoping someone would tag me with this one!

i am old. so i like to see what the kids are listening to these days. other people's blogs are the best source of new music for me. bring it sister!

Oh, I say do it. I love getting into new artists and you listen to some stuff that I don't know about yet.

ALTHOUGH- how do you know From Bubblegum to Sky?! I love them, for personal reasons I guess. LOL I'm wondering if you know the same person that I do...

OK, I have been tagged.

I shall answer.

The total volume of music files on my computer: 25.5 gigs; about 85% of those gigs is ripped from my own CD's. The rest are from friends' CDs, a few from iTunes, and a few that were emailed to me here and there.

The last CD I bought: The last CD I bought was Alternative to Love by Brendan Benson. Thank you, Leah, for the suggestion. Shortly after that I received a gift of David Bowie narrating Peter and The Wolf. I have a friend who is always humming, and I always think she is humming P & the W, but she never actually is. So she bought me the CD.

Song playing right now: Sixth Avenue Heartbreak, by the Wallflowers (whom I saw play in their first incarnation at the Whiskey in LA, with about 45 people in attendance). Yesterday I listened to Cake, The Beatles, and AC/DC with some of my friends while we were driving.

Five songs I listen to a lot or mean a lot to me, in no particular order:

1. Hello Hello Hi, by From Bubblegum to Sky (again, thanks Leah for the suggestion)
2. Such Great Heights, by the Postal Service.
3. Reminiscing, by The Little River Band
4. Steppin' Out, bu Joe Jackson
5. Strip, by Adam Ant

As for the daily sidebar... I can do without. But I AM curious, so if you do have the time and the energy to write it, I'll take the time and energy to read it.

I'm all for sidebars. Lately I've been considering one for my blog called: Innapropriate Things I've Thought About Putting My Penis In.

For today the list would be:

A piece of cake
A jar of jellybeans
A toaster
Bag of marshmallows

What do you think?

I love music reviews and personal recommendations, so yes, please, sidebar!

Being a music lover myself, I think it would be great if you posted your daily musical listenings on your site. I think it is way better and easier (if you tend to listen to obscure bands) to discover new music through recommendations of others rather than perusing the cd isles of say Rasputin trying to find a new band to get into. While I have discovered some great bands that way, I have also bought many cds that I didn't like. My vote is for the sidebar feature.

You have GOT to be the most manic giants fan I have ever met (so to speak). Either that or you type REALLY fast and enjoy it.

At least you're a Giants fan :-)

I'm only doing this because there is a possibility of winning something... I'm a winner, I can feel it!

I say yes to your sidebar list. Your musical taste is much different than mine and I'll be honest with you... I've been exploring your musical suggestions for some time now... While I have yet to agree with your heaping appreciation of Mountain Goats or From Bubblegum to Sky, that doesn't mean you won't eventually turn me onto something that will blow my skivies into the next realm... or at least prompt me to download (legally or not) said musical suggestion.

I've been tagged!
Answers to come...
And, by all means, put what you're listening to up. I am obsessed by other's interest in music and therefore I will check the list often.

do it, for all the reasons outlined in previous comments.

Will: How about a paper cup?

Yes, yes, yes to the sidebar. I'm a lover of all things musical, but there is so much I haven't been exposed to. I love hearing about what you're listening to so I can go check it out. That's why I tagged ya.

And, I've burned a hole in the internet between my computer and 3hive because of you.

I think it would be a cute idea; I've never seen a blog do that. I'm obsessed with music, and it would be interesting to see how your taste in music varies.

Dear Will,

Please install a search function on your site so I can find the post about the paper cup. Inquiring minds want to know and I could use the laugh.

Many thanks.

Love,

Me

Hello!
E-C-L-E-C-T-I-C, sheesh. :)
Just wanted to say I'm all for the tell-me-what-you're-listening-to sidebar because, well, A) I love sidebars (*sighs* someday I, too, will have sidebars. Ahem.) and B) I'm all about the recommendations. It's the only way to go....

Hearts and stars to you, boy.

I'm all for the music sidebar!

You know, I'm still trying to get organized for my Pod People Summer Music Swap (the name changes daily), and you'd expressed interest in participating. But I love games, too, so I'll enter to win a chance at some music another way ...

1. I don't store music on my computer. I'm anal and don't trust my hard-drive, so I burn CDs as backups.

2. Veggie Tales Ultimate Silly Song Collection. Uh, not for me, though. I don't remember last time I actually "bought a CD" for myself.

3. I'm at work. So except for that strange song that plays in my head all day, it's quiet. Well, the police scanner is on but that's not so much "music."

4. (More than) five songs that mean a lot to me ...
"Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's
Roy Orbison "Moon River"
Def Leppard "Hysteria"
Alan Jackson "Drive"
Trent Wilmon "The Good Life"
George Strait "Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?" and "Living and living well"
Tchaivosky's Violin Concerto in D
Louis Armstrong "All the time in the world" from a James Bond movie
Soundgarden "No Attention"
Debussy's "Gardens in the Rain"
The main theme from Star Wars
The National Anthem
"Jesus Loves Me"
LIttle River Band "Help is on the way"

See, I could go on and on like you did but this comments box is awfully small for that. :-)

I love that you included the Star Wars theme song.

I would like to point something out: there are two (yes, TWO) Little River Band songs listed in these comments, and NO Beatles songs. (If you look at FeistyScribe's response on her blog, she had Day in the Life on her list, but that's on her list, not on this comment form, so it doesn't count)
