Gonna Party Like It's My Birthday
Happy Birthday to me! The big day was on Sunday, but I did it up in style and celebrated all weekend long, starting with a Friday night trip to buy myself some festive tulips. I was glad to have them Saturday morning when I woke up to an icky gray sky, but no matter because my friends were throwing me a party later that day, and what's better than that?
For dinner Ethan, Teddy, and I decided to go to Sparky's diner in the Castro, which we usually only see between 3 and 6 in the morning. Sparky's has the best turkey sandwiches, flaming waiters, and mirrored walls.
The party was at Teddy's pad ("Wanna come up and see my succulent?"). Sima had brought fancy Russian cakes layered with loads of creamy frosting, and Teddy made a round of whiskey sours, yummy yum yum.
Then I unveiled my new trick: the pousse cafe. The pousse cafe, for those of you not yet in the know, is a layered drink served after coffee, and it rhymes with goose and not wussy. The art of the pousse is in the pouring, and it requires a steady hand, a trick with a spoon, and a working knowledge of the relative weights of yummy liquers like creme de menthe, creme de cacao, peach schnapps, and kirschwasser. Not bad for a first try!
Then, since two cakes weren't enough, we walked up to Safeway to get a little square of carrot cake. It was there that Sima proceeded to
do rhythmic gymnastics down the freezer aisle and I proceeded to take pictures of everything in the store I wanted (slideshow!).
Back at the apartment, Teddy drank beer from a can, Sima did not do rhythmic gymnastics, and Gayle fired up my birthday candle with her rad Oakland Raiders lighter. I decided I would be two. And it wouldn't be an official party if
Teddy didn't get someone's number.
And then there was dancing! Singing and dancing! But mostly dancing. And mostly involving Ethan and an unsuspecting lady partner (slideshow!). We were giddy, we were sweaty, and we even did the totally gay swaying thing.
I was a happy girl. Thanks for insisting on throwing me a party, everyone. It was just perfect.
But wait! There's more!
Sunday was my actual birthday, and after talking to my grandparents on the phone at 8 o'fuck in the morning, I spent a pleasant and relaxing afternoon in the sun before heading over to the city again to enjoy Birthday Phase II with my two best buddies. Weeks and weeks ago I told them I wanted a birthday bonfire on the beach, and while I was half kidding at the time, the concept eventually became an obsession, and I couldn't imagine turning twenty-six without burning something in the sand.
And the boys delivered. They were prepared with blankets, a couple of Duraflames, and some industrial matches the width of my hand, and on the way to Ocean Beach we picked up a bucket o' cluck and a drink as big as a sand pail, handle and all.
There was singing! There was singing and dancing! But mostly singing. I kept saying over and over "I'm so happy. Thanks, you guys," and it really was just wonderful beyond words, so I won't even try.
Slideshow!

My birthday--the whole day, from beginning to end--was packed full of fun and beauty and love and a lot of my very very favorite people. I'm so lucky to have people who make me feel like a princess every day, not just once a year. I'll never forget this one; it goes on the books with 9, when I got a ten-speed with pink wheels; 1, when I wore a superwoman costume; and 11, when I had a raucous sleepover and got the Tone Loc single of "Funky Cold Medina" on cassette.

Happy belated b-day! Glad to hear you are happy and surrounded by lots of wonderful people.
Happy Birthday! I'm a Taurean too.

Happy Birthday!
And I must say it's pretty cool that Teddy drinks fat bud from a can!
you're so cute.
happy birthday, girl!
sounds awesome...glad you had a great day!
Happy birthday! It sounded like a wonderful celebration.
Woo! Happy Birthday. Sounds like it was wonderful! Do you or your friends do party planning? :)
Hey where has Jeannie been all week? Oh wait the fleet came back to port this week so she's busy.
bring it on, bitch. you are going down. Oh wait, that's the wrong phrase to use, considering the insult that you have hurled at me. I guess I'm the one going down aren't I? I'm really not very good at witty banter. I wish I were, but when you're slightly dumber than the average 5 year old with mercury poisoning and fetal alcohol syndrome, the witty remarks come slow. I'll try harder next week.
don't forget that you also had lead paint and asbestos insulation in your nursery
Happy belated birthday!
