High on a Hill Sat a Lonely Goatherd*

Don't you just love it when something new enters your consciousness--someone's name, an unusual word, a model of car--and suddenly you hear and see that new thing everywhere, all the time? I do. This week it's Mountain Goats. Mountain Goats, Mountain Goats, Mountain Goats. Mountain Goats are everywhere.

One of these random appearances of the Mountain Goats where I didn't expect them led me to singer John Darnielle's blog which as far as I can tell is full of a bunch of lo-fi technical mumbo jumbo that I don't understand and, really, don't want to. There's some other good stuff there too, I'm sure; I just haven't found it.

Anyway, I was introduced to the Mountain Goats last Friday, when my Internet Music Benefactor dropped a song that helped me through the weekend and got played almost as many times as Jude's "Baby Ruth in Atlanta" over Thanksgiving weekend and Stephen Duffy's "So Far Away" over New Year's weekend, and trust me, that's a damn lot.

So, while poking around on Mr. John D's website, I noticed a link to a wishlist and I thought to myself Self, you MUST send Mr. John D something from his wishlist. He helped you through a shitty weekend and the least you can do is buy the guy a record. I then proceed to purchase and SEND TO MYSELF ON ACCIDENT a copy of Tropical Gangsters by Kid Creole and the Coconuts. On vinyl. As in the big round black thing you put on one of those clunky turny things I don't have. So now in five to seven business days I will have a record but no record player and Mr. John D will have my eternal gratitude but nothing tangible to show for it. I sent an email to the contact address on his website, but we'll see what happens. For all they know, I could be a raving lunatic not to be trusted with a mailing address.

(As for my Internet Music Benefactor, I sent him an elephant a few weeks ago, which normally would suffice as thanks for all past and future excellent tunage, but, hey you, if I find myself stuck with a record next week, I know just where I'm a gonna send it.)

*Yes, yes, I will dispense the traditional virtual gold stars to whoever knows this reference. Even though I Can't Be Bothered.

The Sound of Music!!! I love it and the Mountain Goats. Thanks, I'll be yodeling for the next two weeks.

I am so out of it that it took me some time to figure out that you were not talking about Mountain Goats, the animals. LOL...

Wow - Kid and the 'Nuts. Was Endicott that long ago? Very cool band.

YaeyodelayeeodelayHEEhoo...

I've still got a turntable, but you won't find me spinning the dope tunes on it much. I have the recent NEED to buy an iPod Shuffle. No more poppy vinyl for me (it was hard to take with me while I'm out jogging; the records kept falling off).

Sounds like fun! I love the interchanging pics.
