A Not-So-Novel Idea

Today is the first day of November, and that means it's the first day of NaNoWriMo, and that means it's the day where I go to their website and buy a T-shirt that says I'm a participant even though I know there's no way in hell I'm actually going to write 50,000 words in a single semi-cohesive storyline complete with foreshadowing and rising action and a central conflict and a climax and a denoument and character development and symbolism and a socially relevant theme, all the while making sure that every single word is nothing less than le mot juste.

I know, I know, NaNoWriMo's unofficial slogan is "Quantity, not quality," but if you think that's going to work with this chick, then you really don't know me at all.

But if I were ever to do NaNoWriMo, this would be the year. For all intents and purposes, I have no one and nothing to do and should therefore have no trouble at all banging out a few thousand words a night. Plus, I spent all of October 2003 planning for NaNoWriMo 2003, which I never did, so I've essentially been waiting for this day for the 365 previous. This is my year to shine! (And go to local meetups, where cute writerly boy types will be sitting around being cute and writerly.)

Yes, I really should do it this year, because I'm booked solid for the next 70 Novembers. This time next year, I will have a handsome and brilliant boyfriend. The year after, I will be basking in the joy of our recent engagement. The year after that, I will be on my honeymoon. Then it's kid #1, kid #2, potty training, kindergarten, dance and piano lessons, two years living in New York followed by three in Paris, then the book tour, then the season I star in an independent film and get "discovered" and become a wealthy and admired thespian. Don't you see I'm on a schedule, people?! I don't have time to write a silly little novel!

So, to all those out there taking the plunge, I wish you luck. May the force be with you and all that other junk. See ya on the other side, suckers.

Woohoo... I wrote the first 1600 words in the wee wee early morning hours. The only thing I can say about my first 1600 words is that they are consecutively placed on the digital page.

Wow. That is QUITE a plan you have for yourself over the next few Novembers. I'm impressed!

:)

Hey, that's MY life plan. Get your own!

i've decided to take the plunge a little more seriously this year, despite the fact that i don't have any free time or energy... i have about 800 words in so far. we'll see what the next few days bring...
