Summer Nights

I have tons of stories and pictures to share about the weekend in Tahoe, but I have a class tonight and two very important tv shows to watch after that, so you're going to have to wait a few days to hear and see them. In the meantime, I'm going to take this opportunity to say "Nah nah nah nah nah" to everyone who lives everywhere other than here. Yesterday we broke a 100-year-old record and got up to 83 degrees. (We're supposed to be at about 63 at this time of year.) As happens in this ever-mild Mediterranean climate--hardly ever too hot, hardly ever too cold--as soon as the mercury made it past 70, everyone freaked out and turned on their fans and air conditioners full blast. That led to a brown-out that drained the power supply and sent my entire office home early from work. It was already 4, so it wasn't that early (not early enough to spend the day at the beach, for instance), but it was still nice to get out of the office to enjoy an extra hour of sunlight.

We were meeting Teddy for dinner and, because it was so beautiful outside, instead of waiting for him to show up at our place as usual, we set out to meet him on campus, taking a relaxing mile-long stroll. The only shoes I had to match what I was wearing were my purple flip flops, but they apparently got bent out of shape for being kept in the closet too long and starting wearing blisters between my toes after a few blocks. So I took them off and walked barefooted on the sidewalks, street, tiles, and grass. It was like a buffet of sensation for the sole. :) While on campus, we saw just about everyone Ethan's ever met, and one of them accused us of lollygagging. It's been a long time since we lollygagged; we really should do it more often.

We had dinner at an indie burger joint, where we sat outside at a picnic table as steady as a rocking chair. On the adjacent grassy area, little boys were running wild, still in shorts and T-shirts as the sun was setting. One couple came out with their two kids in feety pajamas and bed hair. The air smelled like mown lawn, the sky was striped teal and coral. Not only was it suddenly summer, but I was suddenly eight years old, and can anybody tell me what's better than being eight in the summertime?

Oh!Man! I can just imagine. I want to be in Berkeley in the spring, really I do. For all the reasons you mentioned, especially the purple flip flop blister fiasco, which means simply it is time for new summer shoes. I adore summer shoes.

Nothing! Nothing is better than being eight years old in the summertime! Cheers to this great weather! We're enjoying it down here in Southern California as well!

This sucks. It's been hot here too, but I've been holed up in bed with a cold.

Glad someone's getting some use out of the nice weather.
